3rd Trimester

Amnio...not that bad!

I had an amnio today to check for lung maturity and honestly, it wasn't bad at all!  I just wanted to provide comfort for anyone who may have to have one.  You feel a little prick and that's it.  My hubby saw the needle and told me I was overly dramatic about it beforehand, wasn't even long at all.  If the results come back mature we head to the hospital this evening!

  • Ive never seen pictures, videos or anything of it being done. How long is the needle? I would never WANT to have one but it's more settling knowing that it's not as bad as movies and tv shows make it out to be.

BTW, good luck on the upcoming results! Hopefully everything is okay!

  • Thanks girl!  It wasn't bad at all.  I didn't want to see the needle but hubby said it was only a few inches long and he was even surprised at how short it was (in comparison to what they make it out to be).  I had my eyes closed the whole time and my doctor kept saying "look at the screen, mama."  You could see the needle on the screen in the fluid.  It was kind of cool.  Lasted under a minute.

  • Good to know.  Never had one, but with my last pregnancy I was supposed to.  But my water broke early so we had no choice but to deliver anyway.  Just wondering if there was a reason they did the amnio at 39 weeks?  I thought it was only done if you were delivering before 39 weeks.
  • My hospital won't induce without it.

  • I am having one next week before they deliver my LO. I am glad to hear it isn't so bad. I have been nervous about it! They are checking her lung maturity too, but she will only be 36wks. If hers are mature, we deliver (c-sect) the same day as the amnio!
