Preschool check-in

Sorry the check-ins have been so random!  I do it when I can remember :)

How are the kids doing in preschool?

Do they go outside to a playground/etc when the weather is nice?  Is there some sort of gym inside?

Do they get a #1 day, and has anyone had a birthday day yet?

Is your preschool having a Halloween party?

Re: Preschool check-in

  • DD loves preschool, and the class seems very nice this year.

We have a Halloween party on Monday, so DD will wear her costume, parents are bringing in snacks/supplies.

There is a playground outside, and a gym inside for rainy/bad weather days.

We have a #1 day at school, DD finally had hers.  They do a show and tell, DD read a Reading Level Step 1 book to her class!  So proud of her!

  • He's doing pretty well. His behavior has gotten so much better during structured activities, but every once in a while he'll have a mini-meltdown if he doesn't get his way (occurs a whole lot less than at home, so I'm not too worried about it).

They have a playground area, and use it 2 times a day, weather permitting. They go out in the morning, and he's sometimes able to go out in the afternoon if I don't pick him up early (his class goes out at 4). If it's raining, but not too cold, they'll play on the covered patio area next to the building. During the winter, they will go out if it's above 32', if not, they do active games in the classroom.

His class has Star Student of the Week. This week is his turn. I had to send in pictures of him, and I think I was supposed to answer some questions about him, but never got the questions. For birthdays, we can send in store-bought nut-free treats for them to have during afternoon snacktime.

He has a Halloween parade on Friday, and their afternoon snacktime is their party. Parents are asked to sign up for and bring in special treats and decorations.

  • Chelsea is loving it! She hasn't had any issues...

The kids go outside sometimes, but since it is only a 2-day a week program for 2 and 1/2 hours a day, they don't always make it out. If they go out they play on big wheels, bikes, other riding toys, or in the sandbox. Once it gets too cold they won't go out b/c the time it takes to get 12 3-yr-olds into winter gear is too long to make it worth it! Inside there are some riding toys as well as a decent sized jungle gym with a slide that is available every day.

It is a co-op style school so we have "Parent Helper" days, and on that day the child is also the special helper. Our first one was last Tuesday and it was a lot of fun! Chelsea's birthday is in January - I'm looking forward to baking something fun for the class for that day!

We have the Halloween party tomorrow. The kids are all wearing their costumes to school, and the parents can come back a half hour early to see the parade along the street and for the party for snacktime. I'm so excited!

  • School is going awesome! No issues so far.

There is an outside playground, which I guess they use in the spring. They go to the gym once a week to play basketball or parachute... he loves it.

Each kid has a "special day". They can bring a snack and a toy to talk about and the parents can stay! Justin's special day is coming up next month. Since his bday is 11/13 and there's 16 kids in his class he literally has the last one and I'm so jealous I'm the last mom to get to stay.

They're having a pumpkin day, not halloween- so no costumes. I think it's b/c he goes to a pre-K based in a huge church so aren't churches anti-halloween?

  • Rosie is doing great, she's really enjoying school this year.  Not as many meltdowns getting out the door, so that's good too!

If the weather is nice, they usually go outside. There is a little playground with slides, a playhouse, stuff like that.  Thank goodness they go outside because with the baby, Rosie doesn't go outside nearly as much as she used to.

They don't get any days like that at school, but they do have birthday days.  Today was one of her classmate's birthdays, the parents usually bring in a treat for everyone.

I don't think there will be a Halloween party, there wasn't last year.  Last year her teacher did give out a little treat for Halloween, but they don't have a party with costumes and stuff.  I'm not sure why, but I wonder whether it's a religious thing (although the preschool is not religious).

  • Charlie is having a blast in school and seems to be doing really well :) He can read around 10 sight words already & is counting to 110 & beyond and doing simple addition & subtraction.

No outside/playground/gym time for them. They are only there 2.5 hours a day. He gets plenty of active time with me in the afternoon though.

No #1 day in his class, but there are 2 special "jobs"- one is the surprise box (a pencil box they bring home, find an object to put in it & write 3 clues in a notebook then read the clues to the class the next day for them to guess whats inside) and bringing "Spot" the class pet home & writing in his journal about their time together. He's had both of these twice so far & loves it!

His birthday is next week (eek!) and we're trying to figure out a snack to send in. There are tons of allergies in the class & I guess most kids just bring in regular cupcakes so the kids w/allergies miss out. I've done vegan cake before so I might just make vegan cupcakes. Anyone have any good dairy/egg/nut/berry/citrus free frosting suggestions? :)

They are having a party & putting on a little concert for the parents :) I am so excited to go see him, but nervous I won't be able to really pay attention because I'll have Paul & the 4 month old I babysit with me.

  • Tyler is doing well in preschool.  My biggest issue right now is actually kindergarten, he teacher and therapists are all bugging out that he is not going to get services next year and they are going to kick him out of school, then ultimately give him services.  As a result, Tyler is going to hate grade school and it would be too late to undo what a few weeks in a regular class did to him :-(  I guess they think he is going to be traumatized.  They have been having meetings about him and are pushing for action from the school now, even though evaluations and CPSE meetings are not until spring.

Tyler's school has a full playground as well as a gym and two other gross motor play areas inside.  Brianna's school has a small playground, then inside they have a climbing room which is sort of like an indoor playground.

Tomorrow Bri has volunteered snack.  I was going to bring holiday cookies or cupcakes but couldn't find anything in the store that would work.  I did buy orange colored vanilla milk for them though, it is the last class before halloween.

Bri's school, no Halloween celebration.  Maybe too much for 2 yr olds.

Tyler's school has bee preparing for Halloween all week.  On Monday they had a pumpkin patch event put on by the PTO.  Then all week they read Halloween books and do pretend Trick or Treating, dress-up, touch and feel costumes,  All sorts of activities to help kids accept Halloween, it can be a really scarey, difficult time for special needs kids.  Then on Friday they have a little Halloween party and will go trick or treating in the building.

  • School has been so inconsistent so far.  Lots of Jewish holidays and that is what you get with a JCC :)  Now we should be set up for the usual 2 days a week.  My only issue right now is that the teachers give parents nothing at drop off and pick up and they are really big into "going green" and encourage email, but when I emailed a question, I got no response (over a week).

They are supposed to go outside when it is not nasty out and over 30ish degrees I think.  Daycare regs.  At least it used to be.  Maybe they don't follow them because they are in the gym instead of outside most days.  Whatever!  The kids love either.

Owen's school doesn't do a #1 day or a sharing day, but we are bringing something for his bday tomorrow and he is excited.  The school doesn't allow cake, candy, cookies, etc. so we made his favorite zucchini muffins.

They are having an October Festival on Sunday afternoon and the kids can dress up then.  It should be fun and less hectic than on a school day!

It is interesting reading all of the other responses.  Schools are all so different!

  • How are the kids doing in preschool? Eve's doing well.. she loves going. She's still not the best behaved kid in her class.. and she came home with pink eye (although I think that probably came from one of the halloween parties at the Y or explore and more that she went to this weekend)

Do they go outside to a playground/etc when the weather is nice?  Is there some sort of gym inside? Yes, and yes. They have what they call a "gross motor" area inside.. its got a little tykes castle slide thing thats pretty big, a little trampoline (like the one person kind), a basketball hoop, a balance beam and some other things. And they have a small playground outside..with some sandboxes, a little slide a

Do they get a #1 day, and has anyone had a birthday day yet? -No #1 day and her b-day isn't til feb.. I think it falls over the presidents day break again though.

Is your preschool having a Halloween party?- Not that I know of, but she doesn't go on Mondays (there is school but she doesn't go) so if it was Monday she would miss it anyway. :(
