Eyes still burning from over-bleached daycare I visited today

Our original daycare plans fell through, so I am now tasked with findng a new place in six weeks *sigh*

We had toured a place a while ago as a backup, and since our original place isn't happening I called them back today. Turns out they have an immediate opening, and they asked me to come in for paperwork. When I got there, they offered to repeat the tour and I figured "Why not?"

This daycare has a good reputation in my smallish community (recommended by a pediatrician I interviewed) it's very close to home and the all the people are incredibly nice. Seemed perfect - except today, the infant room reeked of bleach. I mean - I left the place over an hour ago and my eyes are still burning, and the smell is just now out of my nose.

I didn't complain, but they must have sensed something because one of them explained that they need to disinfect everything. I get that, but this is overkill. I use bleach at home (judiciously) and my house never smells like this. My eyes are still burning after about twenty minutes of exposure, and I'm supposed to leave an infant there all day for her eyes and respiratory tract to get fried?Angry

Even more alarming - when I got home I googled "daycare smells like bleach" and found a few forums with some horror stories. Some people have had their kids' clothes bleach stained from direct exposure to bleached surfaced that weren't allowed to dry. I could live with ruined clothes, but this clearly indicates those kids were in pretty close contact and I sure as hell can't live with that.

Maybe I'll have better luck tomorrow.

  • Hm, I think I would talk to them about it since it comes so highly recommended. Was there something unusual about today that led to bleach overkill? I can't stand the smell of bleach... It makes my throat hurt. I just would wonder if this was the norm. I'd also ask them about their ventilation system. They should get feedback even if you choose not to go there!

    Good luck in your search...

  • I'd ask them about it. Maybe a kid went home sick so they went overboard disinfecting the room. Or someone new misjudged the proportions.

If it was highly reccomended I'd check into while continuing to look at other options.

  • My kids clothes have been bleached from them being put on the changing table after it has been disinfected. I think I would rather that then have them come home with some other kid's poop on their clothes. But when I walked in I could never smell any bleach. If the day care is highly recommended I would ask them about it. It may have just been the one a month deep clean. Or a sick kid. Or any number of things. Hopefully it isnt a standard every day thing. Good luck with your day care search! That really stinks you have to find something so fast.

  • Yikes.  My brothers are cops and they used to refer to that as "crime scene clean".  There is just something unsettling about the smell of too much bleach.

Your kids' clothing actually came in contact with wet bleach? And then they had to walk around this way for the rest of the day breathing the fumes? Wow. Not to be bitchy or anything, but I would not be OK with that. I'd personally rather have them come home with poop that I could wash, or throw the item out. Oversanitation is the reason childhood allergies, asthma and immune disorders are at an all-time high, and why antibiotic -resistant diseases are on the rise.

Bleach can be diluted and rinsed away after cleaning. And a monthly deep clean can be done when the kids aren't there, FFS. I'm thinking this is more of a lack of common going on here.
