Upstate NY Babies

Intro and Albany OB?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the bump and live in the Albany area.  I apologize if this has been asked before, but I searched back and couldn't find anything.

I'm looking for recommendations for OBs in the Albany area.  FWIW I  would like to deliver at AMC or St. Peters (not Bellevue bc its too far).

Thanks!

Re: Intro and Albany OB?

  • I use Dr Dropkin, I like him & he's a no BS type of guy and has been an OB for a while.  He isn't burned out, more of a 'babies will come when they want' attitude. I rather the office change my schedule because he has to go catch a baby than get penciled into his black book when it's convenient for him. If I call the OB nurse she knows my name and will talk to me for as long as I need about whatever it is I'm calling about & never once has made me feel like i should get over it because i'm pregnant. My mom didn't like him because he was in the room for all of 5 minutes, but i'm not sure what she wants from him. Honestly that doesn't bother me since he looks at my BP my urine and listens to the heartbeat, he asks if I have any questions and then says see you in X weeks. If I have questions he'll give me all the time I need to talk about things. You'll have an ultra sound at 20 weeks, 30 weeks, and then if you go late you'll have fluid scans. As long as things go well. He doesn't measure fondle height since it doesn't indicate anything & I haven't had an internal exam since it also doesn't indicate anything about when you'll go into labor.  He goes to AMC and St Pete's so it depends on where he's on call for that day or who's covering him.

His advice for me was more like keep with your regular routine, stay as active as possible, keep running a marathon but dont start training for one.  Told me not to eat anything undercooked, and everything in moderation. I know some people who get an entire list of 'no' foods from their OB and I think that's total crap. Gives general guidelines for when to call and why to call, what's normal etc.

  • Dr. Dropkin delivered my son, but I use Dr. Costello (his partner) as my primary OB/GYN. They have completely different personalities, but both of them know their stuff, and he did a great job making me feel calm during the day leading up to DS's delivery. They let you choose which of the two hospitals you'd like to use, but if they already happen to be at one when you go into active labor, then that's probably where you'll end up.

I've also heard great things about Dr. Burstyn. If I had to switch practices, I'd most likely choose hers.

  • Thanks for the recommendations.  I have also heard good things about Dr. Burstyn, but am worried it may be harder to schedule appointments since she is on her own.
  • I went to Albany Med Women's Wellness center when they were on Troy-Shen road in the big medical bldg when they were in Latham.  At first I wasn't so sure about there being so many Drs - but every time I went, they showed genuine concern about the fact I'd had a vacuum/forceps delivery and a bad tear with a Dr from another practice.  They were thorough and open to all options.  Plus when I had a c-section, the Dr did a fantastic job, my scar is tiny, all the nurses raved about the OB.

They are now located near to the hospital, I haven't been back, only because I am done having kids and going to my primary for gyno stuff.

I have also heard great things about the ob previously mentioned that is in Latham near Newton Plaza.  A couple friends go there and loved it, for the 3D and the Drs (although several mentioned that there is a 'quirky' dr there, but that it was still worth it).

  • Used to work for them. I also  used Dr Dropkin as my OB.  Dr Costello is no longer doing Ob so she isnt in the mix anymore.

Like PP said he is all business.  Hes not going to give you all the warm fuzzies you may want but he will not mess around if there is an issue!  He is very efficient and will answer your questions.

The OB nurse is amazing she is always very helpful and never makes you feel like ....why did you call?  No question is a stupid one with her and she goes above and beyond!

  • I love my practice- I go to Dr. Kelty in Delmar. It's just him and his wife is the nurse- they are just really warm and a small comfortable vibe- they also have a nurse practitioner you can see too.

I went to a larger practice during my first pregnancy but then Dr. Kelty was the fill in doc and delivered my son- I liked him so much we switched- and I liked the care I got this time around- way more personal...

  • I went to Upstate OBGYN.  Met with each of the doctors there and liked all of them.  4 total that deliver if I remember correctly.  Dr. Namkoong did my actually delivery and had a great experience with him.

    Good luck in your decision!

My wife went to Dr. Burstyn, and she's great, has two nurse practioners who are amazing, and her ultrasound tech Erin is fabulous. We love them and even stop and visit to show off the babies!
