Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Mom's of little 8monthers...

My daughter is 8 months and was born at 6lbs 13 oz.  Since then she's been stayed in the 13%.  At 6 mo she was 13lbs 10oz.  Since then she's started solids and hasn't been sick at all.  Today I brought her brother in for a cold and had her weighed.  She was only 14lbs 2oz!  That's the 5%!!  Does anyone else have little infants like this?  And are you doing anything to try and pack on the weight?  Also, what are they eating/drinking on a daily basis?  I'm nervous for her cause she's so little she doesn't have a ton of strength.  She can pull herself up, but doesn't seem close to crawling.

  • My guy was in the 15th percentile at his 4 month and 13th at his 6 month. He hasn't been back for his 9 month yet (appt in two weeks), but I think he's still on the small side. Doc hasn't been concerned though, as he is making milestones and is active, happy, and healthy. He was 7 lb 3 oz when he was born at 37w3d. He was EBF 'til starting solids and eats like it's going out of style (3 meals of cereal & fruit/veg, two snacks of puffs or Cheerios, two to three 5 oz bottles at daycare and then nursing on demand when home).

I'm no doctor, but I think your little girl sounds like she's just fine but is naturally on the petite side. Kudos to her for pulling up! My little boy does that every once in a while, and isn't crawling quite yet, but shimmies a lot.

That makes me feel better!!  I need to stop this worrying!!

  • I your LO BF? BF babies tend to slow their growth around this age, where FF babies keep going. Are the charts you're using to get her percentiles the regular ones based on FF babies or the WHO ones based on BF babies?

DS has been dropping percentiles on the regular ones, but he's still in the 40-45th percentile in the WHO BF baby charts. He was 50th percentile at birth.

  • My little man went from being 75th percentile on the regular charts to the 2nd percentile. There was a lot of scary stuff going on with his pediatrician during this time because he wasn't gaining much weight at all, but thankfully not losing. He is passing all his milestones though he still isn't crawling. I read something that changed all the worry around in my head since it made so much sense. I was thumbing through lots of info. tryinikg to figure out what to do to help him gain when I read in the LLL book The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding that the charts do not tell us how much babies are supposed to weigh, just how much they do weigh. Also keep in mind that a new study found that appx. 32% of babies were deemed overweight or obese by the time they are 9 months old, and these babies are included in the samples.

  • DD is still in 0%.  She was born 5 weeks early and has yet to make it on the charts:)  The Dr has us feeding her 24 calorie formula when we give her formula.  Otherwise breastfeed as usual.  She get's 3 solid meals a day.  Problem is that she's a lunatic and never stops moving so she's also burning it all off:)

Dr doesn't seem worried about her because she is showing growth, and she's meeting her milestones.   We are constantly trying to pack on the pounds but she just doesn't want them.  Try not to stress:) :)   Pulling herself up is awesome and that shows she's got some strength in those little muscles:)

  • My DD is 8 months now.   She was 8lbs 5oz at birth.  She was in the 45% for height and weight at her 2 week appointment.  At her 3 months(10lbs 13oz) appointment she stayed near 45% for height but was 13% for weight, at her 6 month (13lbs 3oz) she was stil hear 45% for height and down to 5th at weight.  Out pedi is not concerned at all.  She meeting all of her milestones, and generally a healthy baby.  She has never been a big eater but since starting solids she wants to eat anything and everything that we are eating, but still closes up like Fort Knox when she is full.  DH and I are not tall by any means (5"8' and 5'6") with an athletic build so it looks as though DD may just be following the trend.  I don't really pay much attention to the charts anyways.  If she is happy, healthy and progressing then that's what matters.
