Babies: 6 - 9 Months

At my wits end...

DD has a cold right now and has been particularly difficult for about a week. The past few days she has refused to sleep anywhere, except for on me. All naps, and all night... on me... I've been sleeping in the recliner for three days now... if you can call it sleeping... I can't function during the day because I'm so tired... not that it matters because anytime I put DD down, even just to pee! she starts freaking out and won't stop until I pick her up again... I just can't keep doing this... I just can't... I don't know what to do, though... I've tried to let her cry herself to sleep, but she won't. she just screams and screams and screams until I pick her up... Any thoughts? suggestions? anything? TIA

Re: At my wits end...

  • as a note, she is usually an excellent sleeper. She eats and I lay her down awake at 9:30 and she falls asleep on her own. She sleeps for about 10 hours straight. All of this is so out of character for her... Usually, she flat out refuses to sleep on me and squirms around all the time...

  • What have you tried for her cold? I recommend Johnson's Vapor bath followed by Vick's vapor rub (on chest, back, bottom of feet), it should give her a good night's rest.
  • Any chance the cold is a sinus infection or something else that is causing her pain?  I would maybe call the doctor just to get her ears and such checked out to be sure she is not in pain.  I also agree with the PP who suggested the vapo-bath.  Another thought is perhaps she would sleep better on a incline (try a rolled up blanket under her matress to elevate her head a little).  My LO still gets up every 2 hours all night long to nurse.  I know how it feels to not sleep well and have to work the next day (I teach elementary special education students which requires a lot of energy).  I hope your good sleeper returns soon.
  • After each cold, DD1 would develop and ear infection and conjunctivitis.  I would return to the dr and confirm there is nothing else hindering her health.

Both of my kids responded really well to white noise to calm them down. To kill 2 birds w/ 1 stone you can use a cold humidifier.

Also, at that age separation anxiety tends to kick in.

  • We went through a tough few days last week too. I used a natural salve on her chest to help soothe her cough and under her nose to help clear it up so she could take her paci (there is also some kind of homeopathic cough medicine safe for babies that they sell are BRU that my friend says works). I would also steam up the bathroom before giving her a bath to help clear her up and used a suction bulp. I also resorted to advil at night (she is also teething so I don't know what was causing her more discomfort). I was to the point that if it wasn't better by Monday I was taking her to the dr. to get her ears checked. I would do that if I were you.
