Re: introducing finger foods

  • We did baby mum mums at about 6 1/2 months

At 7 months I started introducing all the other stuff - small pieces of thin, wheat bread; cut up pieces of ripe fruit (avocado, pears, bananas, peaches); puffs & cheerios; pieces of well-cooked veggies (carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, peas); cheese (pea-sized chunks or shredded).  Oh and just last week we did flakes of salmon - she really enjoyed that!

  • I introduced mum-mums at 7 months, but that didn't go over so well, so gave him puffs at 8 months. They make me really nervous b/c he gags alot, but he's getting the hang of it. We've also tried yogurt melts, but I break those in half b/c they seem so big to me!

  • Thinking about starting them in a few weeks. I think we'll just give her cooked/soft fruit and veggies.

  • We 'introduced' finger foods at about 5 1/2 months.  Introduced is in quotes because she decided on her own that she was ready for solids.  She grabbed some puffs off another child's plate and shoved them in her mouth.  She also grabs whole foods off our plates to eat so we started giving her everything we were eating.  Last night she had cauliflower, turkey meatloaf, and mashed potatoes.

    That is so funny.

My baby hates finger foods still.  She doesn't like the textured stuff.

  • Wow I am suprised people wait so long to start their babys on finger food!! We started and about 3 1/2 or 4 months. We did gerber fruit melts and puffs. I tried first to makes sure I could eat them without my teeth( i just pushed it with my tongue against the roof of my mouth) And the disolved easily. She was able to push them around with her tongue and she chewed with her gums from day one. She didn't gag or try and push it out of her mouth at all! Also she loved strawberries cut small and smushed a little!

She is 7 months now and eats almost anything! Everything I eat she can eat. I cut my chicken up small and smush it a little. If i put it in front of her she will pick it up and eat it. She also LOVES graham crackers. Easy to hold onto, suck on and bite!

  • I'm holding off until 9 months, but then I also started on stage 1 solids at 6 months. I'd like her to be sitting unsupported before I introduce finger foods, and right now, she's only just tripoding.

My doc also said to hold off on "table foods" until 9 months. I don't tend to blindly follow my doc, but I've liked his approach to introducing foods later rather than earlier.

ETA: I meant around 6 months, not that exactly.

I'm glad your daughter is eating so well but can't figure out why you would be surprised and think these ages are so old. Babies are not even supposed to have stage 1 foods at the age you started on table foods. The current recommendations say it is best to wait for solids at all until 6 months of age. At that rate the ages people are starting are about the norm.
