Working in a Kitchen (BOH) and Pregnant

This is my first pregnancy and I honestly have no idea what Im doing. I have been working in the Kitchen of restruants for about 5 years now and I love it. It's fast paced and full of energy, although there is a little bit of heavy lifting (36 lbs at the most). I am now in my 17 week and still in the Kitchen. Im the only woman and I can run circles around the men, but I need help to do some things now. I dont want to be in the way or be a bother, but at the same time I dont want to leave cause Im needed. If I go back to serving Im taking a MAJOR pay cut and I cant afford that right now. Im up for a promotion soon, but there is a chance I might not get it. Im so stressed out. Any advice?

  • Keep up the pace and stop stressing about it!  As long as you stay healthy and listen to your body there shouldn't be anything to worry about at this point.

  • I think you could still work back of the house while pregnant we had a pregnant cook last year at chilis.  The heavy lifting can be done by someone else.  You can also utilize carts more.  I still take out trash, run trays with fajitas run dish.  My docs orders were dont strain yourself too much, if its not heavy to you its not too heavy.  But your doc may have other advice.  Just my opinion.  Once you further along you may have to step down b/c you are uncomfortable, but you probably still have another 10 or more weeks for that.  No matter what position you choose you have to take things lighter and I always just try to make up for it in other ways.  Doing extra of what I can.  If I ask someone for a lot of help or to do something for me I sweep their ling or do something for them.  . I would also have a conversation with you Managers on what they feel would be best.

  • Do what you can do.  Follow your doctor's recommendations on lifting and let others know when you need help with something.  I work in a small restaurant both on the floor and in the back of the house on certain days.  Let your boss know you're pregnant and not slacking off when you don't want to lift something heavy, if that's what you are concerned about.  Watch for spills or other things too! But like PPs said listen to your doctor and your body and you'll be fine.

  • If your body was used to it before, it's fine with it now.  Unless for some reason your doctor tells you to slow down your pace, it's my understanding you can keep up your same level of activity.  Did you read about that woman who ran a marathon and then delivered her baby several hours later? Perfectly healthy!
  • If you're still feeling ok and healthy working don't stress. I imagine 36 pounds are fine to lift so long as your pregnancy is healthy and low-risk...and you're able to do it safely. Think about all of the pg moms who have toddlers they are also picking up without any issues. But if the lifting gets to you, your co-workers may surprise you. I work in an environment where there is some lifting and now that I'm showing, not a single guy co-worker will let me lift (or sometimes even reach for) anything even though I am completely capable of doing it myself.

Working BOH, though, the main things I would be aware of are getting enough water due to how hot it can get, wearing comfortable shoes and being careful about spills to avoid slipping.
