Fasted before glucose tolerance test?

I had my 1 hour glucose test today, and I failed by 16 points. However, my doctor had told me to eat a normal breakfast before the test, which I don't quite understand (and I'm a dietitian). Anyway, I'm just wondering if other people's OBs told them to fast before their 1 hour tests, or was everyone instructed to eat normally before their test? I'm not looking forward to the 3 hr test later this week, but I'm more just annoyed that I failed the test and maybe wouldn't have had I not eaten a big bowl of cereal a few ours before it. :-/

Re: Fasted before glucose tolerance test?

  • I was told to eat what I normally do but no food an hour before the test. Also no breathmints or gum because the sugar in that can throw it off or something.

  • I was told to fast for 8-hrs before the GTT.  I'm assuming I passed because I did the test almost a month ago and haven't heard from the doctor about it.

I had to start fasting at 8pm the night before my 3 hr and passed that one.

  • I was told to fast from midnight (but I did since 8pm, but that's normal for me) for both the 1hr and the 3hr, obviously failed the 1 hour, but passed the 3 hour!

  • I was instructed to eat a high protein, low carb breakfast, with no food an hour before appointment time. Then, nothing, including water, gum or mints, after the glucola until they took the blood sample.

I had two eggs, a piece and a half of bacon, a small sip of OJ (felt so guilty. i fessed up about it I felt so bad!) and water, and passed with a fairly low number. (102)

ETA: I was terrified I was going to fail, due to my massive (MASSIVE) sweet tooth. That's why I felt so guilty about the juice. They said to try to have no sugar at all that morning, and as much protein as I wanted, since it absorbs the sugars more.

  • I was told to fast for 8 hrs before the 1hr test.  I failed the 1hr test, and fasted for 8 hours before I took the 3 hr test and passed.
  • I was told no food after midnight.  My test was at 9am.  I forgot and ate a pop tart and a small glass of oj.  My Dr wouldn't let me take it.  I had to go in again when I had fasted.

  • I was told I needed to fast for 12 hours! That was rough considering I am always hungry lately and I felt so bad for not feeding my baby. Maybe that was because it was a 2 hour test though.

This for me too.  However I wasn't told not to eat within an hour of the 1hr, and I'm thinking that's what threw me off so horribly.  I ate my normal breakfast (toast w/ peanut butter and milk) within an hour of having the drink and failed the 1 hr miserably!!  However, I did go on to pass all 4 blood draws of the 3 hour with flying colors.

  • I was told... very strictly!... to not eat or drink anything but water for 12 hours before my test! I have to say that drink was sooo nasty I took one little taste said screw this and chugged it without a breathe in like 3 seconds... FI called me a champ haha but hey it kept me from really tasting it and in return I was able to keep it down! My test was first thing in the morning so being able to sleep through most of the 12 hours helped, and I got a big yummy bagel and OJ from Dunkin Donuts after! But yea no I was told nothin but water, I've heard moms who fail it because they couldn't take the 12 hours and ate something and then they have to do the 3hr and everything comes back perfectly normal...

  • I was told to eat normally the entire day, just nothing high in sugar or carbs like pastries etc. i passed my 1 hr okay. i think i had an omelet and juice for breakfast and took the test around 11am before lunch.
  • I was told to just watch my sugar and carb intake... I did not. haha I ate pasta and bday cake the night before and eggs w toast in the morning and I still passed. The Dr told me that they wanted to 'challenge' my body to see how it handled the sugars on a normal basis. Guess I handled it well? haha Good luck with your test.

  • same thing happened to me. I'm preparing for the 3 hour test which I take tomorrow. I was told to eat normally for the 1 hour test and failed by 13 points. I felt awful about it, but here's what my midwife told me... might make you feel better too... 3 out of 10 women will fail the first test. And 1 out of those 3 will actually have GD. So try not to worry toooo much!

Also, if your doctor tells you to load up on sugar/carbs for 3 days prior to the 3 hour test, do it. The purpose is to train your body to produce enough insulin to be prepared for the tolerance test. GOOD LUCK!

  • Thanks everyone--that definitely makes me feel better!  I'm going to do my 3 hour test this morning, so hopefully, I don't die of boredom, and I pass the test no problem! :)
  • My doctor had a cut off for food prior to the test and I honestly don't remember what it was.  I'm pretty sure I still ate breakfast that morning.

The most important thing is to follow YOUR doctor's instructions, not some one else's.  Every lab is a little different and every doctor's interpretation of what's a "pass" and what's a "fail" is a little different.  How you take the test affects your results so, it's really important that you go in taking the test the way your doctor expects you to.

You are more likely to get inaccurate results by following someone else's instructions than you are of doing it the way your doctor told you.  "Passing" when you should not have puts your health and your baby's health at risk.  "Failing" when you don't have GD carries no risk to anyone.

Good luck on the 3 hour.

  • I'm fasting but my office does the new 2 hour test. If I fail there are no more tests after that. Boo.

  • I was told that I did not need to fast at all. I had scrambled eggs probably 30 minutes before my test and passed with a 60-something. I didn't try to cut out sweets or anything the day before.

My thoughts are that you should eat how you normally eat so you get an accurate reading. If you have GD, you need to know it.

  • I'm like you-- I failed my 1-hour after fasting because I didn't understand either. My number was 162. I took the 3 hour a few days later, and passed all four draws "with flying colors" and my OB even asked me about it because it was so shocking to see the difference. I told her I fasted before the 1-hour, and she said it can spike your blood sugar and provide a false positive. You might be in the same boat.

  • I was not allowed to have anything (including drinks) for 10 hours before.  It seems to be different all over the place.

  • I was told to eat "normal" - just nothing AFTER I drank the stuff. Passed!

  • I wasn't told to fast (so didn't...ate breakfast) and my test came back slightly high. I have to do it again and this time my sheet says to fast! I'm going to fast this time and see what happens!

  • I was told to fast...and I ended up doing the 3 hour test anyway because my levels were 'slightly elevated'. Actually, aside from the 4 needle sticks, the 3 hour test wasn't as miserable as the first one. I didn't feel nearly as crappy during or after.

  • I just had my 1 hour on Friday and I'm still waiting for the results.  My doctor told me it was fine to eat a piece of toast with peanut butter before going, but to make sure it was at least an hour before I went.  When I got to the the testing center, they asked me if I had eaten and by then, it had been more than two hours so they said that was fine.

Once I drank the glucola, I could have water, but no breathmints, gum or anything like that.

  • I was told to eat normally before the 1 hr, but I fasted unintentionally (it was at 9:30 in the morning and I didn't have time to eat breakfast) and failed it by 1 stinking point. But then I took the 3 hr, which required fasting, and passed it with totally average numbers.

I think there are a lot of factors at play, and the 1 hr just has way more room for error. My nurse told me that lack of sleep, low fluid intake, and stress probably contributed more to my failure than fasting did.

How's that for confusing? Tongue Tied

  • I was told to fast before my 1 hr test. But my doc also told me that if I felt really hungry or faint, then I could have some toast. I felt fine before the test at 10am and just ate a granola bar I brought along afterward.

    I passed, btw.

  • I wasn't told to fast before my 1 hour. Since it was at 3 in the afternoon that's a good thing. Dr just cautioned me to stay away from "sweets" -- even some fruits that have sugars in them.

Had I failed, I'd have had to fast for the 3 hour.

  • I was not told to fast, so I didn't, but ate a pretty low-carb breakfast and barely failed with a 140.  Then, I failed the three-hour.  My GD is diet-controlled, but I still definitely have it, and I have trouble with my fasting numbers especially, which is not something you'd know from the one-hour.  Believe me, I was second-guessing the sugar I put in my coffee that morning, but it was good that I had that warning flag.  I didn't mind taking the three-hour.  I do mind having GD, but I would rather be borderline and know it so I can manage it than have it and not know it.
