I really think that Isla (eye-la) is a beautiful name but am not sure if she will have a tough time her whole life with mispronunciation or if it's just too "out there"
Kate ... I think is short and sweet!
what do you think?

I LOVE Isla. Our short list for girl names is Isla, Nora, Vera, Stella and Claire.
I think an Isla will always be called Iz-la, so if that's something that really bothers you, it may help you decide.
I really think it's sad if majority of people wouldn't know how to pronouce this name, I am pretty sure you learn how to say and spell Island in like second grade, so first graders would be the only ones to get a pass from me...

I never said a majority of people would mispronounce it. I'm simply saying any Isla is probably going to be pronounced as Izla by strangers regulary.

I personally have never heard that name in my life, and would never know that the S is silent. That doesn't mean I am less intelligent then a 1st grader. Just in case you weren't educated very well, Islam does not have a silent S and is much closer in spelling then island. Sheesh.
I would go with Kate. I have never heard or seen Isla before, and it may be trendy to this new generation, but older generations might have the pronunciation problem. If you prefer Isla I would not let the pronunciation stop ou, just something to consider!

Anyone who knows Spanish, on the other hand, would likely pronounce this Ees-la, since there's a Spanish word that's spelled the exact same way and pronounced differently. (I've never even taken Spanish and I know this.) So you don't have to be an ignorant rube to get the pronunciation wrong.
Isla! I have seen a lot of baby Kate's recently and a couple Katie's, Katy's and Catherine's. I think this name is getting more and more popular. PLus it reminds me of Kate plus 8..yuk!
Isla! We are 90% sure of we have a girl she will be Isla, so I may be biased but it's such a beautiful name. And outside of this board I don't know a soul to have used it or even heard of it. It's not trendy at all, but it is not so unique that people will have a hard time with it. I'm spanish, and so is my family, and they all knew how to pronounce it properly. Some will say ees-lah, but who cares?! It's a great name, and Isla Kate sounds very cute...In fact, it's on our list

I think Isla is a pretty name, but I'm kind of sick of it.Kate is one of the more simple names that I actually really like.

I like Kate a lot, but also worry about the nickname-y feel to it. I've never met anyone named Isla, and it is very pretty, but honestly I thought it was pronounced "iss-la" until you spelled it out, and I have a college degree

Right off the bat, I read it as Ilsa, which for me is more common. That might be a spelling/pronunciation thing she lives with...but I don't think it should deter you from selecting a name.
Because Isla was so unfamiliar, I looked it up on thinkbabynames.com and they don't have your pronunciation at all.
I know a little girl whose parents are from Brazil and she is bilingual. Her name is Isla and she pronounces it Ees-la. That's why I never understood why Americans I know who name their kids this pronounce it Eye-la?

This exactly. I have several college degrees and would still pronounce the S.

I like both, I would choose Isla because it's different and very feminine and pretty!
Kate is also pretty but alot more common and always will be IMO

Kate - it's simple, sweet and timeless
Isla is pretty but it is trendy.

I'd say if you want trendy go with Isla and if you want classic go with Kate.

Isla Kate. Problem solved.

Love love love Isla.
If my last name didn't start with "P", Isla would have totally been on my list!
Isla.
I like Kate as MN though.
Isla Kate would be a darling, but rather short name.
