Should I strap my furniture to the wall?

My best friend works at a hospital, and they say it's the number one call in from parents for injuries, furniture falling on kids.  Have you done this, or are you planning to?  I have a lot of furniture in each room...would I have to attach everything?  Which straps are best?  Thanks!

Re: Should I strap my furniture to the wall?

  • We are strapping down everything.  I figure once we do it, it will be ready for kid 2 and all kid1 and kid2's little friends for the next 10 years.

    TV anchors

    Furniture Brackets

    2 Permanent Stair Gates

ETA: Everything = speakers, bookshelves, a tall hutch desk, entry table, TV stand, etc...  I'm not going to strap down the side tables.

Thanks.  We plan on moving in a couple of years, but I think it is worth it.  Just trying to figure out what to do about certain pieces.

  • Generally, anything taller than it is wide should be harnessed to the wall.  So a bookcase, yes; a couch, no.

  • I guess I don't understand what you mean by "straps" or "harnessed".  We plan to screw all our furniture to the wall.  We've already started on a couple of the larger pieces.

Also, I'm lurking from 3-6 mo and my DS is almost 5 mo, so he's not mobile yet.
