Breastfeeding and teething!!! Please HELP!!

Hello Lady!!

I am a breastfeeding momma.  But, My little boy is starting to teeth and he has gotten a hold of me a few time today.  That crap hurts so bad!  I have said no and taken him off the breast and he just cry's until I let him latch back on.   I was wondering if there where any tricks that you girls have tried that have worked for you.  I want to breastfeed until he is one.  But at this rate I am not sure if can handle that.   I don't want to be mean cause I know he is not doing it on purpose and its natural for him to bit on things.  But, when he gets me buy surprise.   I have screamed out OUCH!!  I think that scared him. I am a new mom and not sure how to handle this with out scaring my little one for something he has no control over.  Thanks for reading and help.

  • DS has bitten me a few times. It hurts. The only thing I've ever heard to do is stop the feeding session and try again later.  I know you said he cries when you take him off the breast, but maybe try distracting him with a toy for a few minutes and then start feeding again.

  • We've been dealing with biting for awhile now.  And it is not fun.

Here's a great site that has lots of good suggestions.

Good luck to you and hang in there!  It seems like DD goes through phases of biting and stretches where she doesn't bite at all.  Hopefully your little one will stop soon!

  • Keep saying OW loudly.  Yes it is startling, yes he will cry.  My little man cries worse when I say that then when he bumps his head crawling around!  He sometimes startles just when I tense up now but it doesn't last as long.  However, it does seem to make it occur less.  I also just wait a moment and then latch him back on.  We are working on tooth #4 and the biting has caused plugged (or swollen?) duct twice BUT for me it's still worth it and as I said, it's happening less.

No they don't really mean to, it's just natural to want to put pressure on the aching gum, but they do need to learn that your sensitive parts are not to be chomped on.  I've also noticed that you may not want to nurse just after using Oragel because it seems to me that he can't feel what's in his mouth.

  • Thank you ladies for all the help we are slowly working throw this!!  everyone is saying that is okay to stop but I'm set on breastfeeding for a year.  We have made to six months and we just have six more to go!!  I refuse to give up!!  I have never quite something just because I don't want to stick it out.  I sure will look up that web site and use the tricks all of you ladies have used.

  • I think it is so wonderful that you want to continue to breastfeed!  Yes it hurts when it happens but I wouldn't give up those precious moments with my little man for anything!  Proud of you!
