no visible nose on ultrasound?

Hello- I had my nt scan & ultrasound at 12 weeks. My results came back low risk, however, when I look at my ultrasound, I do not see a nose. I've done some googling (which I know is a quick way to freak out!), and I've read that this can be a sign of downs. Has anyone heard anything about this? My Doc showed no concern, so am I just freaking myself out?

my "big ultrasound" is on November 15th... I am currently 15 weeks

  • I believe that is one of the big things they look for during an NT scan.  If they had seen anything of concern they would have let you know.  It's hard for the untrained eye to see everything.  I'm sure the ultrasound tech just knows exactly what she's looking for.

  • hey, what happened to my response? Anyway, yes, you are freaking yourself out. The nose was probably visible, just not in the pic you're looking at. Some of my ultrasound pics don't even look like a baby.

eta: oh, I see. The bump made a DP.

If the baby had no nose, they would have told you.

  • They really have to get the right angle to be able to see it. Many of the pictures (as they move the scan around) would not be right over the center of the nose.

  • Maybe the pictures you have just don't highlight the nose very well. I had some great on screen baby moments, but the pictures I got absolutely suck. Try not to stress yourself out and trust that your Dr. would tell you if he/she had concerns about your baby.

  • Don't freak yourself out! Your baby does have a nose, but the baby probably just moved slightly right when the tech took the picture. Remember that ultrasound machines produce images in "slices" and when we see the baby on the screen it slices the baby in half longways, so if the baby moves his/her head towards to the right or left, then it would be missing parts on the head/face. We have some pics that look really funny, it just depends on the angle of the ultrasound
