C-sections

If you had a RCS

Did you communicate with your doctor about what you wanted?  I know a lot of hospitals go by their policies, but did you talk a lot about the process, what you can and can't do, etc.?  I'm hoping for a VBAC but am mentally preparing for another c-section if I have to.  I'm likely delivering at the same hospital - some things they did I liked, other things I did not like.  They let my husband stay with me while I got the spinal, which I'm hoping for again, but then there was a several hour separation with my baby while I was in recovery. I am hoping that is NOT the case anymore. I'm more or less wondering if what happened during your prep/c-section/and immediate recovery was requested or if the hospital was just doing what it normally does.  Also, did anyone ask for a mirror to watch the baby be born or ask the OB to talk through what they are doing?

Re: If you had a RCS

  • I had an unsuccessful VBAC that ended in an unplanned c/s.  When we made the decision to stop laboring and do the section, I immediately rattled off a bunch of requests.  All but one was met (I wanted a particular doctor to do the section. He was seeing patients and didn't make it down to the OR in time to scrub in, although he did come into the OR to see me).

I didn't talk to my doctor about my requests before hand, but I was fairly certain that all would be granted based on my prior experience.  In your case, I would ask about the several hour separation in recovery to request that it not happen again.

I did talk to my doctor once about a mirror to watch the delivery and they said yes, but in the end I chickened out and didn't want to watch.

I wrote a blog post about a lot of this not too long ago.  Here is the link:

Thanks!!  I just read your post -- that's fantastic.  I delivered at a teaching hospital for my last pregnancy and will be for this one too (probably).  I agree with that.  Thanks so much for your info.

    Good luck with your VBAC!

  • My first c-section was a really traumatic experience.  After a long labor with no complication, we learned that our son was really sick.  He was taken to NICU right away and we were all in shock!

I am really lucky to have a wonderful doctor.  We talked a lot before my scheduled c-section and she made sure I was feeling great about it.  DH came into the OR a minute before our daughter was born.  I wasn't supposed to be able to go to recovery with DH and the baby, but unexpectedly enough, the nursing staff had organized for us to stay together even if it's not hospital policy. I guess the best way to go is to be calm and really nice to everyone.  I'm a firm believer that good things happen to the nice ones, especially in hospitals.

I was to scared to ask for a mirror, but I had my gooey baby put on me.

    Good luck to you!

  • My first c-section was an emergency where I was knocked out.  So I didn't even know what was normal or not normal for a scheduled c-section.  My RCS wasn't a great experience.  They talked to each other during the surgery.  She was having trouble breathing and had a heart murmur so she couldn't stay with me, but I've since learned they don't let them stay anyways.  The hospital policy doesn't really foster to allow bonding.  They don't allow the baby to stay in the room with you at night, they bring the baby to you when they think the baby is hungry, and no matter how many times I told the nurses I didn't want her to have a paci, each time she was brought to me she had one.

I am actually looking for a different hospital because even though I like my doctor alright, the hospital policy just doesn't sit well with me.

  • My hospital's policy is to keep mom and baby together right away. I held Lucas while we were wheeled back to our room. I went over everything with my OB at my last appointment. My hospital doesn't provide a mirror or dropping the curtain, but they will allow for the c/s to be video taped. I'll be doing that next time.

  • Thats horrible I feel so bad for you! I've had 3 c sections and they let me bond right after delivery, and the baby stayed with me the entire time (minus the hour for her bath after I nursed her and minus the 10 minute weight checks at night). Switch hospitals!
  • I tried to VBAC with DS but ended up having a RCS at 40w2d. I did make sure to communicate clearly with my new OB since I too had a several hour separation from my twins and felt left out of the experience w/ my 1st c/s. I told her that unless there were complications that DS would obviously need to be in a dr's care, I'd like to bond with the baby as soon as I got to my recovery room and I put in a request for the LC to come in and help me get started BF. My requests were honored this go around and it was a very happy experience!!

    GL!
