The dangers of footies, socks, etc? Really?

Okay I have a friend who refuses to let any of her kids wear anything with footies. She even turns her kids socks inside out. When I asked her why she said that the strings from inside can get wrapped around a baby's toes and cause them to lose circulation and have to be amputated... Have you ever heard of such a thing?

  • Ok I have heard a string CAN get wrapped around the toe, but usually a baby will cry and fuss right away because it feels annoying so you check it out. However, this NEVER happened to DS and he always wears socks/footies.

  • That's ridiculous and taking things waaay over board in my opinion.

  • I think this is a little over the top, but i have heard of this with hair also.  Your hair can get wrapped around their fingers and cause them to loose circulation.

  • BAHAHAHAHAH!!!  Really?!?!?!?  Now it's unsafe to put socks on our kids?  LOL! Will common sense EVER prevail in our society??
  • This actually happened with my friend's niece. She got a piece of hair wrapped around her toe, and by the time the mom noticed, it was pretty much cut down to the bone. Thankfully, they were able to save the toe, but they aren't sure still how much nerve damage there is.

It's such a fluky thing though, and won't stop me from putting socks on my LO.

  • This happened to my best friend. Her son got a piece of string wrapped around his big toe so tight that they had to take him to the ER to get it removed. I had never even thought of this before but I guess it does happen.

  • Yes, I had a friend that this happened to. There was a piece of long, leftover string inside the foot of the sleeper from when it was manufactured. My friend had to take her son to the hospital because it had cut down deep into the skin by the time they realized what was going on.

Not using socks or footie-pajamas is going a little (or waaaay) overboard though, IMO. After this happened to my friend, I just made sure to check the inside of DD's pajamas and socks after each wash and pull out any loose threads.

  • So my takeaway from this is to inspect socks and footies and cut off any strings before putting it on infant.

But my kid's feet are being covered. :)

This for sure.  I hate how there are so many things out there that scare parents.  Any loose string can be dangerous to a child, but not using socks at all is just way to far!

  • Yes, it can happen, but I don't think it happens that often. Once you notice strings, throw the sock away.  I've never had any problems with any of my kids socks getting strings in them before they either outgrew them or wore them out.   I think she's being a little extreme about it.

  • Sounds like it's just one of those things that HAS happened, but once in like 10,000 babies...so they just mention it in safety books to cover all the bases. But generally if you're keeping an eye on things it won't happen anyway...throw out socks with loose strings, pay attention to if baby is fussing etc..?

This!!! Thanks everyone for the insight. I thought it was a little over the top.

  • My cousin's son had a hair on his toe cut to the bone.  I look at as one more thing on the "check if unexplained crying" list (ladies having boys, it happens on penis as well) but no socks or footies is overkill.

FWIW, string and hair on a baby like that are really hard to see because pudgy fingers and toes have deep creases already- so they don't look that different with things wrapped on them, especially if it's already dug into the skin some.

But that makes way too much sense!

  • I heard of this 17 years ago at my first f/t nanny job. The mom asked that I wash the sleepers and socks inside out and check for loose threads when putting the laundry away. Easy precaution and it stuck with me.

  • It's a wonder I'm still alive with all the sox and footie pj's I wore as a baby. Oh I also slept on my tummy. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones! ;)

  • But my boob could suffocate him so I shouldn't breastfeed!  Everything can kill or maim a child, common sense would be what the difference is.  I would rather look inside his sock then have his feet get cold and him get sick or something.  I think this goes along the lines of loose strings on ANY baby clothes should be tended to

  • My mom actually has told me to always undress baby and check for wrapped strings or hairs when baby is crying for an unknown reason, a few times her hair had wrapped around our hands or feet, etc.

Just use common sense, be aware it can happen and for God's sake, don't leave the baby in distress if something seems wrong! I think it's kind of sad that some parents didn't notice until it had cut through skin Sad maybe it can happen quicker than I think?
