reuse name in same generation?

What is your rule for using the same name that a cousin used?  We are TTC #2 and thinking of boy names. I really want William, nn Will, but DH's cousin named her son Wilhelm nn Wil. We only see them once every year or two but DH's dad and aunt (grandmother to Wilhelm) are close and live near each other. DH and his cousin were really close as kids.  WWYD?

Re: reuse name in same generation?

  • Eh....

William and Wilhelm are two different names, so that part doesn't really bother me.

Sharing the nickname is a little odd. I think I'd say go for it if you were planning on calling him William or Liam. I'm not really on board with both of them being called Will.

On the other hand, your kids are, what, second cousins? (First cousins once removed?) Who cares? Name him Will.

  • My 2nd cousin is 5-10 years older than me and has the same name as me.  My mom said she liked the name and didn't care who else had it.  It's really never been a problem.  We live about 3 hours away and see each other MAYBE every year or 2.

  • I would not use the same first name with a cousin, only because my family and DH familys are really close. Middle names I would use for sure.

  • No one can claim a name.
  • I probably wouldn't, but it's not THAT big a deal, especially because they're different names and you don't seem to be very close to their family

  • I think it's nbd. They're different names. When the cousin is around, call your son William if you think it's weird. But it doesn't sound like that will happen often so I wouldn't worry about it.
  • Go ahead and use it.  It isn't like his brother/sister used the name, it was a cousin.

  • My husband has a fairly unique name in my opinion, it is a family name but it is well used in the family.  It was his grandfather's name and he and his first cousin were both named after him.  My husband is Algin Robert and his cousin whom I have never met is Algin Harvey or something like that.  I guess when away from each other it doesnt matter but when talking in family circles they call them by first and middle name...I dont think it would be a big deal if you dont see these people often.
