LO will be 11.5 months at Christmas, and then his birthday is two weeks later. I know he's too little to remember, but the grandparents will want to give him gifts.
DS loved the Playskool ball popper when he was 1. Also, a ride on/push toy helps with beginner walkers. Melissa & Doug chunky wood puzzles and books are still favorites too.
Our big gift for the LOs' first birthday was the Fisher Price Laugh and Learn House. They love it. They also love the Vtech Farm, the Vtech (or maybe Leap Frog) Potsy with Vegetables, and the Melissa and Doug Fish Bowl.
However, the smaller gift that gets played with everyday are these flash cards:
They love turning them over and looking at them, trying to get them out of the box, bring their favorite cards to me, etc. I didn't think we'd get much use out of them until later, but these are the one thing that they take out from their pile of toys daily. DD carries around the goldfish card and DS loves to bring me the jelly card and put it up to my mouth to pretend to eat.
The Leapfrog Move & Groove Table was one of M's favorite toys from about 9-13 months. It's lost a little bit of its favorite status now, but he still plays with it quite a bit. As a bonus, I think the music on this toy is less annoying than with other toys.
One of his favorite toys right now is this CD player. It combines two of his favorite things: 1) pushing buttons that make music; and 2) opening and closing & putting objects in and out of containers.
I've heard great things about the laugh and learn kitchen, its small and bilingual and everyone that's told me about it says their kids (or grandkids) enjoyed it for years.

We have the L&L kitchen and it is a big big hit, DS loves it! Our friends have the L&L home and that is really nice too.
I can't recommend that ball popper enough. DD loved it and DS has been playing with it for the last few weeks. Do you have a play cell phone, that is also a big favorite at our house. DS prefers mine, but loves the music his makes. Anything DS can push is also fun. I bought DD push toys for her first Christmas (she was 9 months) and DS really enjoys walking around with them. It's great when we are on the back patio because he can zip along. It's an outdoor present, but a swing you attach to a tree is always fun. I think Books are great great gifts. Do you have one of those activity cubes that has the bead maze on top? Both DD and DS have enjoyed that at different stages. It's never been a consistent favorite, but each keeps on rediscovering it and enjoying it when they do. Balls. We have a ball pit and both DD and DS like playing in it. Wooden puzzles. DS and I have started playing them together and while he likes to bang them now, I know he will grow into them. Megablocks/Duplos. Blocks - does DS ever enjoy knocking them down now, eventually he'll grow into making towers, DD is at that stage now. Plus I love playing with them too. We have simple wooden ones and Megablocks, both get used often.
Re: Speaking of Toys - what should I put on LO's wishlist?
