Anyone do research about schools in the Sacramento area?

We live in Elk Grove but are planning to move closer to Sacramento when DD starts school. I'm just starting to research Sac and surrounding areas (Greenhaven, Fair Okas, Carmichael) to find out which schools are best and it's a bit overhwelming. Have any of you Bumpies done this too? If so, would you please share any info. you have? TIA!

  • Our daughter goes to Phoebe Hearst. It's 1st-6th and has both basic and GATE programs. It has a very strict uniform policy and requires 40 hours per year of parent participation. It is a public school, but is a magnet school so it feels more like a private school. My mom used to teach in SCUSD and when I was pregnant told me to get my daughter into PH because it's the best school in the district. We have been very pleased.

  • This is very good to know, thank you. Did you have any trouble getting her in? From what I've gathered, if we live in the SCUSD she can attend any of the schools but I'm guessing there is a lottery or waiting list for such a good school.

  • We had to apply for her to get in, but she got in for 1st grade. Once you're in, you're in. She went to our local neighborhood school for Kindergarten, but has been at PH since then. She's in 4th grade now. You'll just have to apply during open enrollment, which I believe is generally in February.
