3rd Trimester

When does your water usually break?

This is my first baby. I am a working mother and plan to work as long as possible before I am due. I am terrified of my water breaking at work!!

Has this happened to anyone? What did you do? When does it usually happen?

Thanks for any info!

Re: When does your water usually break?

  • I wouldn't lose sleep over this. Only 12-15% of women have their water break spontaneously before labor. The rest of us get it broken by the doctor and an amniohook.

  • I think you're going to find it varies a LOT.  This was one of the biggest misconceptions about birth (IMO) that I faced.  I swore before getting pregnant that everyone's water broke while standing in the street hailing a cab hours before labor even started and that it would signal the start of labor.

    Ha.

Well for me, I was in hard labor for like 20 hours before my water broke, right before I started pushing.

Lurking from 0-3 ...it could also break spontanesously IN labor. My water broke after I started pushing. :) I would recommend researching amniotomy risks before you consent to one. THe occurrence of prolapsed cord is significantly higher and that can land you in a true emergency c-section. I chose not to, but do what you're comfortable with when you have all the info. Happy laboring.

  • This is my fourth pregnancy and I have yet to experience my water breaking on it's own.  Every time it's been done in the hospital with a hook.
  • Not that many women's water actually breaks pre-labor. It's kind of a movie phenomenon.

  • Well, I am in that 10-15%!!

With my first DD, I had my water break at home at almost 41 weeks (I had JUST gotten home from work)!  It started my labor!

  • Only a small percentage of women (something like 10%) have their water break at the beginning of labor. I really wouldn't worry about it. A lot of women end up having their water broken for them in the hospital by the doctor.

I am working until I give birth. I threw a towel in the car, just in case my water breaks, so that I have something to soak it up while I drive home.  Otherwise, I am just continuing on as usual!

  • My OB broke my water during my induction.  I wouldn't worry too much about it, like pp said.  If it does break though, you need to go to the hospital fairly quickly due to increased risk of infection and you need to deliver your baby within 24 hours, at least that was my doctors policy.

  • My OB broke mine when I was at 8 cm.

My water was broken in the hospital while they were inducing me. But i agree with you, im terrified of even the slightest possibility of it happening at work. Anywhere else would be fine with me, even the store. I just cant see it happening at work.

  • With #2, my water broke 24 hours after dr stripped my membranes (I was already 3 CM). It was NOT a big gush. To be honest, I had just gone pee and my thought was...I felt like I didn't wipe myself LOL. I even proceed to my hair appointment that afternoon cuz I wasn't sure, but when I got there, I kept feeling wetness so I turned around to get DH and head to the hospital. It was NEVER a gush, it was a trickl
  • My water broke at home at 37w4d, I thought I had just peed a little (twice) stayed dry for a little bit and drove a half hour to my sister's house to see my niece and nephew and got out of the car and had the dramatic gush in her driveway.

My sister's water broke with both of her kids at home- at 38w2d and 38w3d

  • Despite the Dr telling me on a Friday before my induction on that Monday that I would never make it to my induction bc my bag of waters were so thin and pushing against my pelvis and that he figured I would be back later that evening, I went to the zoo the next day and walked all day long and then went to a bonfire on my cousin's farm where I rode up a bumpy ridge in the back end of a pickup truck. My water stayed put. I started induction at 8 pm that Monday and he was coming in to break my water at 7 a.m. but at 6:15 a.m. it broke on it's own due to the induction... So, despite even the dr's guess that mine would break with normal (ok, maybe mine was a lil above normal!) activities, it didn't. I wouldn't worry about it!

  • Not only is your chance of your water breaking very slim, think about how often you are at work really. There are 168 hours during the week and you are only there for 40 of them.

With that said, my water broke when I was in transition, dilated to a 7 at the hospital.
