dumb question about vehicle on the way home.

So my husband has a truck with a full backseat.  I have a hard time getting in it now!  It comes up to about my waist if not a little higher.  I have a grand am.  Since we live in Wisconsin, we're betting on having snow when the baby comes.

Had a conversation with my husband this weekend about how we'll probably need to take the car to the hospital so it's more comfortable for me to get in and out. He said "um, we'll take the truck b/c 1.) you hate how i drive your car and 2.) if there's a lot of snow on the way there, or a lot that happens when we're at the hospital, we don't have to worry about not being able to get there or back in your car."

Just to clarify, I hate how he drives any vehicle.......not just my car. Smile   But I was trying to explain to him that even if I have a regular birth, chances are it's not going to be comfortable for me to climb up in the truck.  And if i ended up having a c-section for some reason, I'll probably REALLY not be able to climb up into the truck.  he said he'll get me a step stool.

Anyone have this conversation with their SO's or am I the only one is ridiculous and has thought about this.  Any other 2+ moms who can talk about the pain/stiches, etc. that I'll have to deal with after birth and how these might make it difficult??

  • When you leave the hospital you usually are still on some kind of meds.  They gave me some pretty hard stuff after my c section.  I was taking  ibuprofen  and  Tylenol  after my vaginal births.   So I wasn't in pain till I was home already.   I live in Minnesota and I would say go for the truck, these winters are unpredictable!!

  • We've talked about it - we're in Oklahoma, so it's not 100% that we'll have snow but it could be icey and stuff, and we have a truck like you describe.  We've been talking about getting running boards ever since we bought the truck, but I think we'll probably just use a step stool like you said (and I may have to start doing that within the next few weeks, anyway!).  Our other car is a little 4-door, and would be fine if we have nice weather but I think we'll plan on the truck to just be safe.

  • Not a dumb question at all! My DH thought the hospital provided a delivery service for the baby and I after as he'll be too nervous to drive usIndifferent

I would definitely take the better vehicle in snow as you never know what the weather will do and it is best to be on the safe side.

  • I don't know anything about snow however I drive a big SUV and we'll be bringing that to the hospital. I think it'll take as much effort to get in and out of bed or up from a couch as it would into a truck. And I do agree with the others, I would rather be safe if the weather could be a concern for you.

  • DH doesn't have a license, so I will be going in whichever car MIL comes to pick me up in! LOL

I would say if there is any chance things could get icy/snowy, go for the truck

  • Thanks ladies!!  And I'm glad I'm not the only one who has thought about this! :-)

I just wasn't sure how easy it is to pop a stitch (depending on where it is.)

  • I don't think it's a huge concern. Either way getting in and out of a vehicle might be uncomfortable. I don't know about c-sections though. I'm in Montreal, there will definitely be snow and we don't have a truck, so if your car has winter tires on and you'd be more comfortable in your car I don't see the issue and the "need" for a truck honestly.
  • Definitely have been thinking about this too! I actually just told my Mom last night that when we go to and from the hospital I would prefer that she drive me in my car. I know she hates driving other cars but it is more comfortable, has more space and is a way smoother ride. I figure if I'm in pain I don't want to be jarring over every bump in the road.

  • i drive a grand am as well, it's 2002, standard edition. and it's rear-wheel drive, making it a lot safer than other sedans on the road because most of them are front-wheel drive. it gets around fairly well in the snow unless the conditions are just ridiculous, in which case i will be borrowing one of my dad's F350 trucks. lol. DH drives a truck, but it's not 4x4 or front-wheel drive, so we're counting on my car to get us to the hospital by default.
  • This is something I didn't think about with DS#1 and the drive home sucked.  I didn't have to worry with weather but had an SUV that was raised so it was hard to get into.  I recommend a small step stool to help you get into the truck.  I did have a c/s -- getting in the car was one major feat...the drive home sucked hard core.  You don't realize how many bumps are in the road.  Tongue Tied  Definitely play it safe with the weather though!

  • I would do the truck to be safe.

  • As a former Chicagoan, I must say: don't they salt the roads where you are?  People have lost elections for such misdeeds!

    Ha!!  Big Smile

Yeah they salt.....when they get out and about!  Last year they seemed to not to ANYTHING until the snow stopped falling.  Which i guess makes sense.  However, some people have to get around whether there's a foot of snow on the ground and more coming down or not.  Stupid mother nature........
