Sleeping on sides

Does anyone else's shoulders hurt from only being able to sleep on your sides?  I sleep on both sides (not just the left) and they're both constantly sore.  Am I the only one?

Re: Sleeping on sides

  • Yes! I have to flip over every couple hours at night because my shoulder hurts.

  • My shoulder and hip hurts when I wake up in the morning from being on my left side 90% of the night.  By mid morning it usually feels better though.  Hope your shoulder feels better.  Make DH give you a nice massage!

  • I feel the same way too, so i inevitably resort to some time on my back (which i'm not even sure why it's so bad??) But by the time 7am comes, even though i could sleep more, i'm ready to get up because my whole body hurts from any position...

  • Its mainly my hips that hurt from side sleeping.. i can still kinda do a half sleep on my stomach but mainly resting on my thigh.. Its a strange position.. but it helps keep pressure off my hips

  • I was just complaining about that to DH this morning! If I sleep on my side, my shoulder and legs are sore and if I sleep on my back my neck and toes hurt. We just can't win. I got a coupon in the mail for Kohls and they have some thick padded mattress pads I was going to check out to see if that helps at all.

  • Yes! I end up with shoulder and hip pain. I'm a side sleeper normally, so it hasn't been as big of an adjustment, but I definitely wake up in the middle of the night with more pain and have to turn over frequently.

This!  And when my arm falls asleep it wakes me up, so I get up a million times a night.  I still sleep on both sides, on my back (though that hurts my back after awhile), and on my stomach (with a pillow propping up one leg/side).  Though being on my stomach usually makes Lucia kick up a storm, so I don't know if that means she likes it or she hates it....

All of this. I can still sleep on my stomach as well although I'm a lot of cautious and aware of it so it's not always as restful and I wish it was.

  • Yes, but I find if I switch back and forth and use a pillow to hug, it is reduced.

I just read the most interesting post on the 2nd trimester board about sleeping on your left side:

"I'm a L&D nurse and I just attended a conference on advanced skills, it discussed this being a myth, for many many years left was thought to be better so nurses instictually do this, however the latest research has shown that either side (perhaps one over the other depending on the patient) is best. If the baby's cord was on the left side flipping a patient to the left will exacerbate the issue as it would cause further distress, its completely situation specific, however it IS a myth that the left is better, either is good for baby provided no other cord factors are involved."

  • my arms fall asleep too!  it is so annoying!  I also have bad hip pain.  I have a snoogle which I use, but I find that it exacerbates the sholder/arm pain.  I got a wedge pillow and I have been using that too under my bump while hugging a big pillow, that has been a little better and it makes me less worried about sliding onto my stomach (and more comfortable, too!)

  • My shoulders hurt.  I haven't gotten pillows to work out for side-sleeping and since I am still mostly waking up on my back, I'm gonna keep laying down that way to fall asleep.  It was really rough for a few weeks when I was too nervous to sleep on my back but I am probably better rested and better able to fall asleep laying flat (but a little propped up).

Today I am pregnant & I love my baby!
  • We have a really comfortable bed so sleeping on my back is my favorite.  I've really been trying to sleep on my side, but my arms sometime fall asleep and my hips kill me.  I have the bobby sleep pillow and I've found that using it behind me, instead of supporting my bump, gives me just enough prop to not be flat on my back but also not hurt my hips or my shoulder.
  • mostly the left shoulder for me :( i do a lot of flipping at night as well
  • Yes - I hate these aches and pains!!!
