Just wanted to say a quick thank you for all the tips and advice - sorry I didn't have time to chime in that day, work was insane and I was trying to get everything ready for the trip.
LO did great - I was so relieved! Our normally 7 - 7.5 hour trip to SC took about 8 or 8.5, but that was so much better than I anticipated. I honestly thought we might have to break it up into 2 days (which would mean we had barely any time with family).
As you all suggested I pumped and fed him bottles and babyfood in the car most of the time. We left just before his morning nap, stopped for an hour or so for lunch and to let him stretch his legs and play, then got back in the car for his afternoon nap. He actually napped pretty well in the car, but most times I needed to be in the backseat and pretend to sleep too, then once he fell asleep I climbed into the front to keep DH company. The rest of his awake time he played with toys (I brought a big bag and just kept switching them out), played peek-a-boo, sang and read stories (or my magazines out loud with fun voices).
Oh, we also had relaxation music on just before and during his naps - I think it really helped him calm down and drown out some of the road noise. They were CD's I got at Michaels for $1 each when I was pregnant and planned to used during labor but never did.
And - we had the dog with us too! She was in the way back with her bed (we have an SUV) and I think she actually liked not being next to the baby where we used to have her sit.
For anyone else that's nervous about traveling with their LO - don't worry, you can do it!
Re: Long car ride w/8 mo went amazingly well!
By the way, I paged you here. No rush, but I thought you probably didn't see it if you were out of town.
Whines - thanks for the heads-up, I didn't see it! I think I'm ok for now, the 3x pumping, fernugreek, and cookies seem to do the trick. thanks for thinking of me though!
I completely understand, DH wasn't a fan of the back seat until he realized he could "pretend" to sleep to get LO to nap and then he could nap too
