birth story! PIP

Little Noah is almost a week old now and I'm finally getting around to a post about his birth.  Here it is :)

I went to the hospital Tuesday morning for some moderate bleeding and they checked me out and put me on the monitor. They weren't sure where the blood was coming from but I was 3cm dilated and the doc said at nearly 36 weeks it would be safe for him to come out and scheduled me for an induction. They were worried the placenta could be abrupting.

So I had pitocin for a few hours and got some pretty painful contractions going on--but the contractions weren't actually making my cervix progress--and then it was time for my epidural around 3am. I got that and let me tell you, it's truly a miracle (pain-wise)! About an hour after that though the doctor became concerned that the baby's heart rate wasn't varying enough and my BP was dropping. He broke my water and there was a lot of blood when he did that so he said I needed an immediate c-section because the placenta could be separating from the uterus.

And they weren't kidding about immediate. From when he said that to when the baby was born was under 15 minutes! It was all really fast and scary and lots of people running around yelling. One of the people running around knocked over my IV pole and ripped the IV out of my arm, and the anesthesiologist had to put another one in very fast.  Fortunately I had the epidural already and didn't need emergency anesthesia which would have been general--since I have a genetic allergy to most general anesthetics, I was told to get an epidural early on just in case of such an emergency. I felt nothing except pressing on my stomach (which made me barf...lovely) and then I heard a baby cry. It was so fast I asked "is that MY baby?"

My husband couldn't be in there for the delivery because it was too crowded and they were majorly rushing. He came in right after though and cut the cord and sat with me. He got to hold Noah once they had done his apgar score and stuff, I really couldn't because of the way my arms were with the IV and all but the anesthesiologist took pictures of the three of us. I was so jealous because I desperately wanted to hold him. He was born at 4:28am on 10/19/11 weighing 5 pounds and 6 ounces, 19 inches long.  DH was so incredibly happy sitting there holding him.  I don't think I've ever seen anyone so happy.

Once they were ready to bring me to recovery they took Noah to the special care nursery since he wasn't quite full term. I didn't really know what was going on because I'd had a shot of morphine, but I was upset that I hadn't held my baby yet. My mom sat with me in the recovery room while DH was with the baby in the nursery.  A couple hours later they brought Noah back down to recovery so I could hold him and then I felt a lot better.

He had to stay in the special care nursery for about 24 hours due to being not quite full-term, but he was just fine and had no complications.  They brought him to me in my hospital room on Thursday morning and we got to go home on Sunday afternoon.

The c-section scar hurts big time and I am still on Percocet for it, but I am so so so happy I don't even care right now. In my extensive experience of 6 days--being a mom is the greatest thing ever!
