solids....help please

Needing to hear about other Mama's and how you started solids...

My little guy apparently now LOVES the pureed stage 1 baby food. Like LOVES it. He will eat an entire jar for lunch and another one around dinner time. He does take less bottle during the day when he eats his veggies or cereal.

The thing is, I don't know how much to give him. If he can eat the whole jar, should I give him the whole jar? I know this sounds dumb. Please no flames. I really have no clue and keep hearing conflicting advice... (and we all know how accurate and appreciated my MIL's advice is....He would be eating steak right now if I listened to her!) Stick out tongue

Anyone care to share their schedule for when they started? And how much?

Thank you!!!

  • I was so bad with keeping a schedule of feeings for DD, but we started right around how old your LO is now. We tried the cereal, then added some pears. So if you're already doing the fruits/veggies, let him eat a whole jar! Why not! It's preparing him for REAL food! :) No steak til he's 1 and has good chompers! heehee :)

  • I can't really remember...and I am trying to as A is just starting cereal now.  I think just go with the flow and as long as he is getting the amount of formula that your ped. recommends, then he is fine.

  • We started really slow with the solids and skipped cereal altogether. At first when we started, she would only take about 1/2 the container and since I was only with her for dinner, we only did solids then. Once she got more interested, she would eat the whole jar. I would just follow his lead really - if he wants it, ok and if not, I wouldn't push it since he is getting more calories from formula/bm/whatever you do.

  • I just started DS last week on cereal, and I make my own baby food, so I'm not sure how much is in a jar of stage 1, but he gets 2 ice cube sized portions (about 2 ounces).  I always nurse him first, then offer food.  I feed him until he's uninterested, or the food is gone.  I say, nurse/bottle first, then if he wants to eat the whole jar, let him.
  • I think I basically let him take the lead, but I made sure that he had the amount of formula that was necessary throughout the rest of the day so that I was sure he was getting the required nutrients.
  • This helps, thank you. I think maybe I am concerned that when he does eat more solids, he will eat less bottle later on...

We have his six month appt coming soon, so I am going to ask the Pedi too.

    Thank you!!!
