3 hours from start or finish? help

Hi everyone, breastfeeding newbie here and totally overwhelmed by everything!

I'm pumping for my premature daughter in the NICU and am trying to establish a good schedual for myself. Do you pump/feed every three hours (3,6,9 etc) like clock work or 3 hours from the end of the pump session/feeding? For example, I started pumping at 2:30 and ended at 3:00. Do I start again at 5:30 or 6? What do you do?

Thanks in advance!

Re: 3 hours from start or finish? help

  • Timing should always be from the start of one session I the start of the next session.  Every three hours would look like: pump from 3-3:30, 6-6:30, 9-9:30, etc. best wishes!

  • newborns tend to eat more like every 2 hours usually so you may want to pump every two to keep your supply up while she is in the hospital.

Congrats on your daughter! I also pumped for my preemie in the nicu. The lactation consultant at the hospital suggested I get a 5 hour stretch of sleep at night and ten pump every 2-3 hours during the day to get 8-10 pumping sessions per day. The extra sleep will do you good :)
