soy milk vs rice milk?

DD is allergic to dairy and tree nuts, so as we transition her from breastmilk, we're going to use either rice milk or soy milk.  I've been doing research to see which one is more beneficial but if anyone can point me to any useful websites, I'd be most appreciative.  From what I've found so far, it looks like soy milk has more protein than rice milk, but my husband is leery of giving too much soy.  Any resources or opinions?

Thanks!

Re: soy milk vs rice milk?

  • soy will have more protein- but I'd agree with your husbands reservations.  Check out coconut milk.  Not sure how the carton's compare with rice milk- our son drinks a mix of the enriched rice milk + the coconut milk (for fat)

  • Our twin boys are allergic to many things, so we have been through that same debate.  Soy milk has the needed fat, but soy can also act like artificial estrogen in the body, among other things, which is not a good thing.  So we have gone with the enriched rice milk so they still get their calcium and vitamins A and D, and we've added fat to their diets through other sources (mostly meat sources), but if she can tolerate coconut, that is a possible avenue.  The most helpful thing for us, once we knew for certain what our boys are allergic to, was getting referred to a nutritionist.  She was awesome at navigating how much fat, how many calories, etc children should get.  Good luck!
