Reflux/teething drool is so harsh on the skin - ?

DS is starting to outgrow it but it's still alive and spewing. More in the late afternoon than other times. The teething drool is out of control, though. It gets into the folds of his neck and it's suprisingly tricky to clean under there while in the bath! I sit him at the bottom of his whale tubby and have him look in different directions while I washcloth the area. Then when I have him out I pour baby powder into the creases.

Do you have any tricks?

The drool pools around his ears and back of neck and now his skin is really dry.

Face lotion thoughts?

He'll hate me for writing all this in public ;)

  • Just a heads up.  Baby powder = not a good idea.  Talc powder is terrible for their lungs and cornstarch powder can feed yeasties and cause a terrible yeast rash.

We use Aquaphor for redness (actually generic target aquaphor).  It takes the red away overnight.  You can also use lanolin if you have it.  For dry skin I use the aquaphor too.

  • Ditto Katie on the powder.

I use lanolin or avacado oil on C's cheeks. Our OT recommended the avacado oil for massage and now I use it in place of lotion regularly. Its not sticky like olive oil and keeps her skin soft. I've heard that coconut oil works well too.

  • Greaaat - I'm giving him a yeastie beastie on top of everything. Thanks for the head's up! I've heard you mention avo oil a lot. Perhaps I'll get some of that! In the meantime I use Aquaphor for my lips but I've never known if that's the same thing that comes in the tub in smaller packaging.
  • I've always used Mustela Baby Face Lotion and love it! Ive heard great thing about Aquaphor too.

Yeah, we use the avocado oil on everything these days. I would never have thought about it if it wasn't for our OT. I think aquaphor is the more popular choice :)

  • Oh my gosh poor Audrey has drool rash all over her chin Sad

    No suggestions, just commiserating.

  • We have major under-the-chin issues - and DD can lock it down like a vice! I use wipes at least twice a day to clean it out usually when shes playing on her back, I seem to get to her neck easier that way, and pay special attention in the bath. PP are right, my pedi said no powder or lotion in her creases unless they are red or irritated.  Then aquaphor or even bactriban (rx - we had some skin tearing in her leg folds)
