Just woke up choking.

I just woke up from a nap choking and it freaked me out. Heartburn & acid reflux has started kicking my butt lately but this takes the cake. I was laying slightly elevated on my side for an afternoon nap. No heartburn before I fell asleep but woke up choking on what seemed like a little vomit, gross sorry. I sat up right away to catch my breath amongst coughing/choking. It took a little bit and really kind of freaked me out as I'm home alone. I then began worrying about the little guy but he's been moving around since I sat up. Anyone else experience this?

Re: Just woke up choking.

  • Sounds like reflux, just try to keep your top half a bit elevated when you lie down.  I've been on long term bedrest, and its happened while I've been awake but lying on my side.  Taking a small glass of lactaid milk with my meals has really helped with the reflux pain, too.

  • It's one thing to experience it as an adult, but imagine having a baby going through this?!  The way you describe it, it has to be a horrifying experience for a little one. Tongue Tied

. Absolutely!! That was the next thing that ran through my mind...I hope this doesn't pass along to our little guy.
  • I experienced this big time with DS1 and 2.  From 20 weeks on, I had to sleep propped, sitting up in bed (was good for the hip pain!!!)  I would absolutely have to stop eating by 6pm, took lots of zantac. Ate lots of oatmeal for dinner.   I would bring tums right up.  this pregnancy, I have had it off and on, but not nearly as consistently and severe as the last 2.  It really is scary waking up from a deep sleep choling on vomit, so I feel for you and hope it gets better!

  • I have experienced this with this pregnancy it freaks me out but once I catch my breath everything is ok it hasnt happend alot but enough to be annoying.
  • this is always super scary. i get this but not because of acid reflux. i get mine because of asthma! its sounds like the same expereince though. when i happens i usually sleep with my upper body resting on an incline of 3 big pillows. mine always happens in 2-3 episodes though. itll happen, ill fall back asleep and itll usually happen at least a second time. very very scary

  • It happened to me in the middle of the night last week. So unpleasant and not gonna lie, a little scary. I think I ate too close to bedtime that night so I've been really careful about making sure I leave 3 hours between my last meal and bedtime. I know that's hard to do with naps, but perhaps try to take a nap in a recliner or something that leaves you a bit more upright if it hasn't been very long since your last meal.

  • I have woken up in the middle of the night from a deep sleep just to swallow down the vomit/acid reflux creeping up my esophagus. It is definitely not fun...oh the joys, am I right? I drink a little milk and that seems to help with the heartburn... for a while anyway :)
  • This happens to me once in a while as well.      It is scary because you are ina  deep sleep and then can't breath.    Not fun.     Tums or Pepcid tend to help me, as well as a glass of milk.

  • Yup this has happened to me a lot too. Same as PP I have stopped eating at least 4 or 5 hours before bed, if I do its just something really small. I have had a lot of trouble with acid reflux and am taking a prescription for it. But with our stomachs being pushed so far up it does not surprise me that it could happen. It did really freak me out the first time it happen though.
