Sleeping longer and avoiding getting engorged

I went 7 hours without pumping or nursing because LO slept 6 hours (previously 3-4 hours). I woke up so engorged and ended up with a milk blister and clogged duct.

When they start to sleep longer, do you still wake up to pump? How do you keep it from getting so engorged?

Re: Sleeping longer and avoiding getting engorged

  • It took a couple days and then my body adjusted. I was getting up at 2 am to pump every night, despite my LO was STTN (8pm-5am). I finally cracked and wanted to sleep, too. So... I just dropped that pump, and get up at 4am when I need to start my day anyways. Just be prepared to wake up and pump right away, and you'll need to add a few minutes to that session. (Or nurse... )

  • I just wake up leaking and very full. I'm hoping my body adjusts.

  • No, I didn't wake to pump -- sleep is too precious!  It took a few days for my body to make less milk.
  • It will take a few days, but your body will adjust.  If you keep waking up to pump, you're going to keep making that milk, and it will be a never-ending cycle.  Tough it out for a few days and enjoy the extra sleep!
