New to The Bump

Newbie... Prego Acronyms?

Hi ya'll!  I'm also new to thebump.com, like many of the posters on this board. ;)

Lucky for me, I was already able to experience the wisdom of the 'gold/silver/bronze' posters... wow, are they mean!  Mean enough that I ended up deleting my question!  Apparently, that saying 'no question is a stupid question' isn't true, haha! :0)

Anyway, I was browsing through the boards and I see a lot of acronym use that I'm not too familiar with them... can someone shed some light on the more common ones??

  • Deleting a post is only going to get you in trouble. Just sayin' The Bump never forgets.

There's a Bump Glossary at the lower left of this page.

    FWIW, I'm a platinum poster.

  • Yeah, that's what I'm hearing. But honestly, I'd rather 'get in trouble' and 'it not be forgotten' than have to read the unnecessary, snotty replies to my harmless, honest question(s). And I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to imply all frequent posters are rude & nasty; I know that is not the case. It was just a horrible first forum experience. Thank you for the acronym link! I appreciate it.

I'm going to take a wild guess that your first post was either 1) riddled with spelling/grammatical errors, 2) was a question asked a gazillion times on that board (and it may even have FAQs to answer them), 3) was somewhat or totally inappropriate for that board, or 4) didn't include an intro which is a big deal for some of the more titghtly-knit boards. Or used the word prego, which last I checked was the name of a spaghetti sauce and puts my teeth on edge when people use it to describe pregnancy.

My biggest pieces of advice are: 1) Lurk, lurk, and lurk some more. When you're ready to post, lurk some more! You can get the tone of the board, how your question will be received, etc. And 2) have a thick skin. This joint isn't for everyone. I've been at least mildly flamed on almost every board I visit, and I'm still here.

Oh, I know that!  I'm sorry if it sounded like I was implying everyone was mean!  I just felt like a bullied kid at a new school!

Dr. L has great advice and like she said- this is why you should always lurk before posting to get the feel of the board.

Thank you for the advice, I will definitely take A LOT of time looking through the posts in the future!

Well, I've already read some of the feedback you've left other users, and I hoping you'll be able to offer me helpful information in the future, too, so I'll refrain from using the 'spaghetti sauce' word again. (see Subject line) Big Smile

I didn't include an intro in my post, but I think my grammar & spelling were okay.  I was just wondering when a pregnancy test would be most accurate... My period is 3 weeks late (tested negative last week), but since then have continued trying.  I'm unsure about when I should test again because my cycle is so off.

I didn't realize message boards were like this, but I do now!  You've been so helpful; thank you so much!

  • If you're 3 weeks late, and getting negative tests, you're not pregnant. If you don't get a period after 60 days, your dr can prescribe something to kick-start your period.

There's a pg test accuracy chart: you can google it. It really doesn't get accurate until about 12 dpo. But if you don't know when you ovulated, it's a crap shoot.

  • Welcome aboard - I'm new too and got a somewhat snotty remark after leaving a post to someone's question about what to get as a gift for the younger of same gender siblings.  I basically said my family will get gifts even if I ask them not to, so I started asking for diapers and other items that would for sure be useful.  One of the regular posters on that board left a post saying "they don't get people asking for diapers, how does LO enjoy diapers... to each his own".  The earlier poster was right, you have to have thick-skin, which is why I am mostly a lurker.  Although I don't understand the flaming of other posters, if you don't agree or think its a stupid post - ignore it.  There must be some really miserable, bitter people out there to be rude on a public parenting forum, unless someone was talking about hurting their children, I would never be rude or judge what they post.  Good luck!
  • sheesh yeh i dont know why ppl are so snotty. good luck. a/s means anatomy scan, i had to learn that one the hard way, lol. are you using first morning pee for the tests? if so they should definitely be accurate if youre that late. i tested the day i was supposed to start my period and got a faint positive.

  • Dr. Loretta,

You must be the type of bitter person who gets on message boards just to reply to a comment so you can try to either make someone as miserable as yourself or to try and make them feel stupid...? Did I get that right? This a website for information and to toss out idea's, NOT to make other's feel dumb. So instead of telling people to not post but to lurk, maybe you should do us all a favor and NOT be mean, or rude, didn't your mother ever tell you if you don't have something good to say then keep your mouth shut..???? People like you really get under my skin.

I ran into the same thing with some of the more "tenured" posters. Not always very nice. I'm new, too. Just got off BC last month and started TTC this cycle. 2 days till AF is due!! Hopefully she won't show her face, but I know it may take a while to conceive.

Just read this post. Thanks Dr. L & Ambsies for sharing! Great advice on checking out the board before posting. Didn't know some groups were so tight knit, makes sense now.

  • I've been lurking on the TTC board for awhile and have been commenting on posts here and there but I have learned A LOT from the ladies on that board. Here is a chart for testing but it's really only helpful if you know for sure when you ovulated (DPO stands for days past ovulation):

    HPT accuracy DPO
    10 dpo : 35%
    11 dpo : 51%
    12 dpo : 62%
    13 dpo : 68%
    14 dpo : 74%
    15 dpo : 80%
    16 dpo : 88%
    17 dpo : 92%
    18 dpo : 99%

Also, if you're new to TTC (trying to conceive) I would recommend going to the TTC board and reading the newbie link at the top. There is a lot of good info on there that will save you from "stupid questions" (trust me...I would have met a lot of snark by now if I hadn't lurked and read this info first!). As far as the acronyms, the glossary is great but there are still some that aren't on there. If you can't figure out an acronym the best thing to do is just ask...if it's something that is not in the glossary then someone will usually tell you what it means with minimal snark. Hope that helps!! And good luck!
