Ok. I have been a life long nail biter. I HATE IT! I really hate it, it looks gross, feels gross, etc. etc. And as someone who teachs behavior modification to other everyday I feel like i have tried everything. There have been a few times as an adult where I have been able to stop for several months at a time. Anyone else have this habit, or know how I can really kick it. I am verging on going to a hypnotist...which sounds nutty to me but something has to work...right?

Re: NBR confession, need advice
would keeping your nails manicured help? I would hate to spend the time and effort of a manicure just to nibble it off... I know there's also this stuff you can paint on your nails to make them taste bad..I forget what it's called but I had to use it on my dog to keep her from licking/chewing her boo-boos.
or you could maybe think about all the germs, dead skin cells, bacteria, etc that are accumulating and living microscopically under your nails that you are basically eating.
I agree with PP....if you get your nails manicured very nicely most of the time you don't want to mess them up!
Or....go to the store and buy fake nails and wear them....maybe it'll deter your urge to bite when you unconsciously start to bite on fake plastic nails!
?Little Love of my Life?
I was a nail biter for years, like for as long as I can remember! Mine were never bitten to where they bled but still quite short. When I started my first real job I was so embarrased for people to see my nails when doing paperwork that I got professional acrylic nails and had them for a little over two years.
This summer my nails were growing like crazy (thanks to my prenatals), so I had my nail lady take off my acrylics and I am now getting a manicure and shellac polish (the no-chip paint) every other week. I love it because they are my real nails but the thicker polish deters me from biting. I also figured that real nails were a bit more mommy friendly come baby time.
I still find myself nibbling every now and then but for the most part they have stayed mid-length and "normal" looking. I know I have tried all kinds of methods in the past and none ever worked, until now. GL finding your magic solution!
I was a nail biter until like 7th grade. That year my dad (who HATED that I bit them) told me if I made it my new years resolution to stop biting them he would give me $50.
It worked! He bought me the most hideous Steve Madden platform shoes with the money, that I still have
.
Maybe if you could set a goal with a prize at the end it would work. There is also the nasty tasting nail polish you could put on your nails if you haven't tried that yet.
