Had a chat with my boss...

First, let me give a little background information for why I was beyond scared to talk with my boss.....

I had been with a company from June 2008-March 2011, when I hit a brick wall.  DH and I made a decision that it would be best if I chose to pursue a new position with another company.  March 2011-July 2011 I was happy with a new (more challenging) position, and suddenly was blindsided by the new company going under.  Fast forward July 2011 - September 2011, I was temping and interviewing like MAD.

As of 10/4/11 I came back to my previous company (the one I was with 2008-March 2011).  My boss is the same person, and she was apprehensive to rehire me, fearing that I may hit that brick wall again.

***** Well, last week my boss was on vacation in California, and my nausea, M/S and headaches hit full swing.  I ended up having to tell my team leads just to get them to understand my frequent stepping away from my desk.  They were excited and happy for me with my news.  Only catch was they told me if I didn't tell boss first thing today, they would tell her at our mid-day meeting.......

Happy to report that my boss was excited for me!  Her only  concern was whether I intend to work thru as far as I can, and if I am planning on returning after the LO arrives.  I rested her assure that the answers were both yes (DH and I have no "stay at home" options, we both MUST work).  I know that the company has had it's fair share of women leave on short term disability during their pregnancies and never return after their LO arrives.... I don't have any intention to be that person, and I firmly let my boss know.  She smiled and hugged me in excitement of my news.......

I feel much more relief now!

  • Awesome!  I'm glad she was so cool about it!  That makes it so much better and what a relief, right?!

I'm in a similar situation, king of.  Before I had DS I was kicking @ss at work, doing a great job.  After coming back from maternity leave, I had a hard time keeping up and my attention just wasn't there.  Now, I'm finally on the right track and building up steam again.  I plan on telling my boss this week, after my next appt on Friday.

I know he'll be excited, but I'm afraid that he'll wonder if the same thing will happen again when I come back after another 3 months off.  I really hope it doesn't, and I'm going to try my hardest to make it work and do great things, but I totally understand why he might feel anxious.  Even if he doesn't say anything, I know he'll be thinking it.

  • Glad it worked out. But it would make me question my coworkers -"if you don't tell, we will do it for you" good thing they aren't supervisors....ever heard of Hippa? Also, that is your news. Glad it worked out.

  • Glad that your chat went well but your co-workers irk me.  It's not their news to share and they should mind their own business.

  • Congratulations!  I'm sure you feel much better now that the news is out at work. :-)

I actually had no problem telling my boss...she was the first person I told (even before my husband).  The reason I told her so soon was because I was afraid the HPT gave a false positive and I needed to go in immediately for blood work.  I just kind of blurted it out to her while I was asking for a few hours off.  I wasn't expecting her reaction...she was VERY shocked and negative and actually told me to tell my husband to keep his "thing" in his pants!!

My boss is 100% reliant upon me.  She admitted to me that she doesn't like me to have time off too often because I'm her "security blanket."  So, I understand that she is fearful because she can't function without me at work.  She's afraid of how she will manage while I'm away on maternity leave, but I thought that was the worst thing she could have said to me at that time.

You are fortunate to have a more understanding boss.  :-)

    Good luck to you!!

I was thinking the same thing!

I was nervous to tell one of my bosses, but both are so happy for me and constantly ask how I'm doing or if there's anything I need to make me more comfy at work, more work at home time, etc.  I only work at home when I feel really sick (which has only been 1 day so far) because I don't want to take advantage of the flexibility too much.

Yeah, I agee. That is kind of a strange thing for coworkers to say.

I told my bosses as soon as my blood test confirmed my pregnancy positive. There are three of them and they could NOT have been more happy. One is close in age to me (my direct supervisor) and has 3 young children so she is a GOD SEND. The other two were beyond excited - one even cried. She also cried when I showed her our first u/s LOL. They are like mothers to me, especially since I lost my mom last year. I can't wait to tell the rest of my coworkers - many who are also like mothers to me since I am the youngest fulltime employee at my job and I know many will have the same reaction.

  • I think my two coworkers/team leads felt obligated to tell my boss if I didn't because I had to log time off last Friday while my boss was out and ultimately they were the ones who have to approve it.

They were scheduled to review employee attendance with our boss at today's meeting, and I think they felt obligated to say that they approved me taking some time off on Friday despite being new and not having accrued time off yet based on me being sick.

  • That's so great.  I'm not going to tell my boss until after the NT scan in 3 weeks.  And he's actually out of town until then so it's perfect.

On another note, I can't help focussing on the fact that you said that your m/s picked up at 9 weeks - I've already had a pretty hard time with m/s and I really hope that doesn't happen to me!

  • Awesome! I'm so glad things worked out for you at your job!

I actually was that person who took maternity leave and didn't return when DS was born almost 2 years ago. My situation was different though in that my work place wasn't so friendly. I wasn't granted the flex time I needed because I got pregnant 3 months after my direct boss did and our head publisher--in a strange fit of anger--did away with ALL flex time when I asked for it. She also upped the amount of time we were expected to spend at night-time events--which would have made life hell for us.

Needless to say, I didn't feel too bad when I took the maternity pay that I had earned before leaving the company for good! I am glad for you, though, that you have a workplace that is understanding. :)
