Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When to tansition to toddler bed

Just wanted some opinions, B will be 2 years old next month and is still in his crib, I mean, that's acceptable right? He's never tried to climb out of it (which is a shock because he climbs EVERYTHING). I just figure as long as he hasn't done that yet it's not weird to keep him sleeping in the crib?

Re: When to tansition to toddler bed

  • We moved DS1 to a bed at 22 months because we wanted to transition him before DS2 was born. If we were not having a baby I would have probably waited a few months. Not that we had problems but I just would not have thought to.

We are moving DS2 to a bed soon so he will be about the same age that DS1 was. He doesn't climb out of the crib but shows interest in DS1 bed. They share a room. I have also had a problem this past weekend with DS1 climbing in the crib when he has been sent to his room. So I am ready to move it out.

In general I suggest moving to a bed a few months before you will try potty training. I can't imagine trying to potty train while in a crib or doing both at the same time.

  • I"ll do it once he starts learning how to climb out of his crib.
  • We're planning on getting DD a toddler bed soonish. She's shown no interest in climbing out (which is weird because she climbs everything else), but we (ideally) would like her potty training and sleeping in her big girl bed before #2 arrives.

Like a PP said, I think it's better to get her into a toddler bed before potty training and I don't want to implement tons of changes all at once with a new baby coming.

  • DS is still in his crib as he is comfortable in there and hasn't tried to climb out. I will leave him in there until he is 3 and then re-evaluate.

  • If he is not climbing out and there is no need for another child to access the crib then there is no rush.  We transitioned early,18 months, because DS was climbing out and he is super tall and grew out of his mini crib.  He is loving his full bed but it took 2 weeks adjusting and he still likes to climb out a bit and walk around. But now we leave a night light on and he understands that he has to crawl right back into bed when he is ready and go to sleep (never takes more than 20 minutes).

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with him still being in a crib. We made the transition from crib to mattress on floor when he was 14 months old and just over the weekend we got an acutal toddler bed. Both transitions were very smooth.
