New peanut allergy

We recently discovered DD is allergic to peanuts. See post for details.

We have an appointment with the allergist on Thursday. DD did have skin prick testing when she was about 10 months (suspected MPI) but everything came back negative. I am just not sure what to expect this time around. Does anyone have a peanut allergy kid that doesn't have an Epi-pen? If you have one, how many and where do you keep them? Besides ingredient lists what other precautions do I have to take? What do you do for going out, parties, etc.? Any advice you can give this new allergy mom would be greatly appreciated.

Re: New peanut allergy

  • Our DD was confirmed a peanut/tree nut allergy at 21 mos.  She is now three and we haven't had any reactions since.  We do have Epi-pens (2).  Before she started preschool we kept one in each diaper bag.  We have a small and a large, so that either way she had one with her.  Now one has to stay at preschool and the other stays in our smaller backpack style backpack.  When she was diagnosed with the allergy I just sent out an email to friends and family that she would be around.  Basically, I still ask whenever we go somewhere if they use peanut oil or anything like that.  I am also one for reading ingredient labels.  If a friend or family member isn't for sure about something, I just redirect her to something else.  I also try to carry extra "safe" snacks with us all the time.  Hope this helps.  It really seems like no big deal to us now.  It also makes Holiday baking more special, because we make everything from scratch, so it just adds to our family traditions.
