grunting noises?

Hello ladies,

I am a preemie mom x2 - our 3 year old was a 30 weeker and our 2 month old was a 29 weeker. We just brought our newest addition home a few days ago : )

I am wondering if your peemies make/made grunting and groaning noises all the time? When we were in the NICU this time around I asked a nurse about these noises that DS makes and she said it was just common in preterm babies (I never asked why). Now that he is home and we are with him around the clock, I realize that it is all. day. long. Literally, he is so noisy that we cannot sleep at night with him making them. We have been splitting up duty time downstairs through the night so that one of can sleep at a time. I know my older DS made them too, I just don't remember them being so loud!

My questions for you is 1- anyone know what these noises are? (We asked the pediatrician about it and he said not to worry since he isn't uncomfortable or upset by them). And 2- if your preemie came home making these noises, how long did it take for them to stop?

Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining. I am thrilled beyond belief that he is home after 8.5 weeks and don't even mind waking up with him when he needs to eat at night. Just wondering when I will actually be able to sleep in between feedings : )

They told us in the NICU that these are called "preemie grunts" and they have them for a long time. My DD is almost 6 months old (3 adjusted) and she still makes the noises. It's not as much as it was at first though but it's still a good bit. Mine doesn't make the noises when she sleeps though. She also makes a lot of "clicking" noises with her mouth that they told us was reflux.

DS was born at 33 weeks and made those until he was about 2-3 months adjusted. I am not sure what the noises are, but I know how unsettling they can be. Gabe is 13 months now and still makes them on occasion.

My little man makes these grunting noises all the time too. I have thrown myself out of bed in a panic to check him if I don't hear him make them for a while.

I agree with those that say "acid reflux". The nurses have told me that's is foten what they are grunting about while they are trying to digest and keep the food down. Imagine laying flat as you try to digest all of your food! Blech.

My one son is on prilosec for reflux and the other is not at this point, but I do pick him up often when I hear that noise--he seems to stop and be much more comfortable when I do that. I hold him upright against me and lightly bounce him around a bit.

I have twin girls and they do this all the time sometimes waking each other up. At first the noises kept us up and then I thought they did not enjoy being swaddled but now we've gotten used to it.

We hold them upright for about half hour after each feed and they still do it. Since we now know it's just something preemies do, I will miss it when they outgrow it.

My little man is 2 months old, 2 weeks adjusted and he's still grunting away.. HOWEVER, If your baby is arching his back, turning red and straining while grunting (like mine did at first) it could be something more serious. In my case, our baby has milk hypersensitivity and GERD. He is now on elecare formula (most expensive crap ever) and doing better.
