1st Trimester

I think we may be crazy....

My husband and I made the decision to adopt a puppy!   We have wanted a dog for several months and just recently moved into a larger home that can accomodate the puppy.  Now that we have the puppy I am seeing that having a puppy is almost as much work as raising a newborn except that puppies dont nap!  We also have a two year old.  Today is my first day home with the two of them and I'm feeling like life is a bit out of control!  I think we have been outside for pee runs approximately 10 times!!  Hoping that puppy training goes quickly and things settle down before baby #2 arrives!

Re: I think we may be crazy....

  • Crate train it.  Things will calm down by baby time.  My husband trains labs and we also have house trained puppies for people.  Crate training them works so well.  It teaches them that it is their safe place.  They nap there, and go there when you aren't home.  It helps tremendously with house training.  :)  Oh and another trick is turning on a radio at night which will help them sleep, putting a blanket over front of crate when you want puppy to nap or sleep, and no water after 6:30 or 7:00.  Just thought I'd share.  I know puppies can be exhausting!  I am sure you are probably doing most of these things anyway.  :)

  • If you aren't crazy you are surely brave!  I can barely keep up with my 2 year old child and 5 year old dog today!
  • We got a puppy a couple of months ago, knowing that we were ttc... just keep up on training for everything! What kind of puppy did you get? We have a 5 and a half month old great dane (as you can see in the pic below...)

  • Oh my gosh. I love our dog as our child, but if I had to raise her from a puppy again, I don't know that I could do it. And when we got her I wasn't working or had any kids.

Best wishes, just keep chanting in your head that it will grow to be an adult, low key dog some day Smile

  • Thanks for the tips!  We are using the crate at night time and she has done pretty well, usually she wakes up once during the night, but then goes back down to sleep.  We havent used the crate for naps, because she hasn't taken many naps yet since she's been home!  Glad to hear it will get easier!

  • Congrats on your puppy!  :)

We have 2 dogs and 2 cats...I can't imagine how nuts it will be in our house when we add a baby to the mix! hehe

  • If the training stats to become too much, consider a few sessions with a dog trainer in the home or taking some puppy training classes. It can make a huge difference and make the training go so much smoother. Good luck!

We have a dog and two rabbits (all rescues) and I would LOVE to get another dog now but hubby wants to wait until after the baby.

  • Like the PP said Crate training is the best. We got a Maltese mix early this year and potty training has been a challenge. I hear small breeds are difficult but I think its just our dog. I would highly recommend putting your puppy in her crate for a few hours during the day so you don't have to take her out 10 times + a day. If your puppy is only 2 month old I wouldn't crate her longer than 3 hours during the day except at night. For us we were lucky since our Molly from the beginning would sleep through the night and nap throughout the day. She also loves her crate, its her little private space and she loves it. Though she rarely gets crated now that she is potty trained. Good luck! One last thing I would highly suggest make sure your puppy does her business every time she goes out. That way she understand why you are taking her out. We made the mistake at first to let our dog out by herself and she would go out to play and then pee inside. Once we got in the habit of going out with her and making sure she did her business, she started to get it. Again GL!
