at 10 am. I'm not sure why I'm all stressed about it. I'm not even stressed. It's just like Tuesday at 10am is highlighted in my brain - I'm hyper aware of it as a date.
Right now (after a visit with my sister the linguist and elementary school teacher who's got/has had speech and hearing impaired kids in her class - in addition to her own processing disorder) our best guess is that he's hearing things, but muffled.
Of course, he right now has a head cold, and even the most acute hearing people get muffled when their heads are full of snot.
I think I'm most worried that we'll get in and go through this long test (it's an hour at least) and they'll say "well, there's something going on, but we can't do anything about it."
Good thing he's a proficient signer for his 21 months.
I'll keep you posted!
ETA: Update: So he passed, with flying colors. Which is awesome. The unfortunate part is that it's still a limited test just based on his development. So we'll test him again at 4 and then at 6 or 7 unless there's reason to test earlier. She did mention that since my sister wears hearing aides, that what we could be looking at is something degenerative rather than a straightforward processing disorder - so it's entirely likely that he'll have hearing tests his entire life.
I will continue to sign with him because he pays more attention when I do. And I feel like I'm reinforcing what is (essentially) his first language. Also I LOVE ASL. I could go on and on.
So there we have it. Right now there is nothing noticeably wrong - aside from his being an easily distracted toddler. I am satisfied, but just as we'll keep an eye on his vision (H and I are both practically blind) we'll keep an eye on his hearing as well.
Thanks for all the well wishes! They must have done something because she said he was the most cooperative and patient toddler she's worked with in a while and the test only took about half an hour rather than the 45-60 minutes they allow for. Bumpie dust = powerful stuff. :-)
Re: UPDATE: Baz's 1st audiologist appointment is Tuesday
Sending you lots of good thoughts for tomorrow. Hopefully they can put most if not all of your fears to rest.
BTW, Riley had his hearing test through Children's in Oakland and his hearing is suffichant for speech, and we decided against the sedated test at this point. Just wanted to update you.
Thanks for the update! That's good to hear
When he's older you can explore other avenues but if sedation isn't necessary, I'm with you: skip it!

I updated it up there. So now I'm bumping it up.
Also - I am happy to answer any questions you guys have. :-)
my sister has a processing disorder, so we're trying to stay ahead of any hearing issues that may crop up. this was to determine how much of his behavior is due to not listening, and how much is due to not hearing.
