Preference for one side

Last night, and for the last three feedings, LO has decided he doesn't like the left side...he fusses and pulls off.  But when I put him on the right side he eats no problem.  Any ideas on how to get him to eat on the left side again?

Re: Preference for one side

  • My son did this with me right around 3 or 4 months for about a week or 2.  I would just offer the side that I didn't start with last time, and if that was the side he was pulling from and fussing I would try a few times and then switch to the other side.  Then I would always re-offer it again.  I think sometimes one breast can have a slower letdown than the other and they realize that it's not coming fast enough so they get frustrated.  So the breast they perfer may have a fast letdown and they know that.  Ususally with my LO nursing from that side then offering the other side worked as he got something inside of him so he wasn't so hungry then he didn't mind the slower flow of the 2nd breast. But after a week or two my supply started regulating better and the problem corrected itself.  You may need to just pump that side if he won't nurse from it until everything stablizes.

  • I've found that if I start her on the side she prefers, and get that initial hunger satisfied, I can get her to switch sides mid-feed, and keep me from getting engorged.

#1 preferred the left side and #2 prefers the right. It's weird.
