Kid Furniture

We are moving Annabelle to our spare bedroom, and we need to buy her a new dresser and end table for her room. We are have decided to just use the full size bed, instead of buying a toddler bed. She's already sleep in a full size bed with bed railings and has done wonderful. We really want to get her room finished before Christmas. I just need some places to look for kid furniture. We have looked at Ikea, but I'm not really in love with furniture they have there.

I have looked at Pottery Barn and Land of the Nod (love the furniture, but not the price). Any other places I should look. I'm drawing a blank at the moment.

Re: Kid Furniture

  • We did the same thing with Aiden before Claire was born.  I went the Ikea route.  While I wasn't thrilled with the choices, I liked the prices, and I figured it will ultimately get banged up within the next five years.  We got him the Hemnes dresser and nightstand.

I did look elsewhere and found that the furniture was much more expensive.  I just couldn't stomach spending $1000+ on furniture for a three year old's room (especially knowing how hard Aiden can be on things).

  • Penneys Sears Target Walmart most regular furniture stores have a kids section. I'd probably do Ikea or Target though.

I'm in the process of trying to cobble together DD's Big Girl Room on a very limited budget, and I've used Target as my go-to. I'm just getting basic pieces that can get her through the next 5-6 years, then I'll invest in quality furniture. I don't want to risk it with a 4-year old, and we can't swing it right now anyway.

I figure I'll pretty the room up with the decor, so I'm less concerned with the furniture.

Good luck finding stuff you like!

I have gotten a bookshelf from Target once it was a piece of crap. Could not hold anything, without the shelves bowing. I'm wondering how their dressers and nightstands will hold up.

  • Have you checked Buy Buy Baby?  They have a good range of prices and the occasional 20% off coupon - plus they take unexpired BB&B coupons (though I've gotten different responses from different salespeople as to whether they'll take those for furniture).

  • I love the Hemnes low dresser we have to J's room, it serves as his changing station as well. It is such a good size that when #2 comes along (and they will be sharing a room) I don't think we will need to get another dresser. The top drawers that are square shapped are perfect for diapers, wipes, etc for diaper changing, and the others are great for PJ's and then all the baby accessories. And then all of J's clothes that I don't hang in the closet fit in two of the drawers. Have you thought about looking on CL? There are some very nice, quality dressers for sale on there.

  • Oh, and I hated the knobs that came on the Hemnes so I bought cheap wood ones and painted them the same color as J's room and then added some detail, but there are so many cute knobs at anthropologie, target, etc that would look cute as well.  I think it kind of personalizes the dresser.

I have not. I'll have to check them out. Thanks for the recommendation.

  • I was just going to suggest IKEA. We've had pretty bad luck with Target furniture and we have been able to find less expensive and sturdier furniture at IKEA.

  • IKEA was my suggestion too! My son has the Hemnes set in black. I love the white...so cute for girls!

  • My suggestion is CL or an estate sale (shocker!) We had a white chest of drawers that was Basset (that we bought off CL and was ~5 years old) and it did not hold up well. We got an older set (dresser and chest of drawers) @ an estate sale- it's probably ~40 years old- and it is much higher quality. It will definitely make the transition from the shared nursery to one of their "big" kid rooms whenever we get around to doing that!
