How many feedings for a BF 8 month old?

Hi ladies! I was wondering if you could share with me how many times per day you nursed your BF baby at 8 months old?

I am currently nursing five times per day around 7am 10am 1pm 4pm and 7pm. I fit 3 feedings of solids and naps around those feedings. He eats ALOT for breakfast  but then may only take 1/2 jar of stage 2 the other two feedings. I think that's fine since BM is still supposed to be his main food source. Also, I'm content to leave it this way because my supply has been very up and down and seems to be doing well right now. I would hate to drop a feeding and mess it up.

I know at some point I have to drop some of the feedings because he won't be getting milk that often once I wean at 1 year. I just have no idea if we just drop 2 feedings cold turkey when he turns a year, or slowly work him up to it now. Thanks for your help!

  • I had that same schedule with my kids, including the solids.  Keep what you are doing, b/c you still have a ways to go.  I'd look more seriously into weaning around the 10.5-11 month mark if you want to wean before he turns one.

If you want to wean at one year, you'll eliminate one feeding per week (I'd keep the 7am and 7pm more for comfort feedings, and begin with the others first.

  • Isaac weaned on his own by 7 months so that is no help.

But P weaned naturally starting about 12M or so then dwindling down gradually by 15M.  So, basically I just let her direct it, if she dropped a feeding for the second time, that was it. So if she didn't nurse once in the morning then picked it back up for a couple days then dropped it again, that was it for morning feeding.  But it took 3 months.  Not sure if that is OK with you bc some women like to choose their own stop date, but I would have it in my head how you want to do it - cold turkey or whatever and stick with it.

  • Thanks ladies!

Kerrin, thanks so much! That is exactly what I need to do. I was not sure if I dropped a feeding now and let him take more solids or just wait until he can have cow's milk. I will be looking back at this again in 4 months when I forget how to do the weaning :)

  • both boys were on the schedule you mentioned until they turned 1 and then it was just milk with meals/snacks.

  • At that point I think I nursed 3-4 times a day: first thing in the morning and immediately following her 2 naps; potentially one more time between her 2nd nap and dinner time, depending on how long a span of time that was.  He final feeding of the night was always a bottle (or formula) right before bed, so if you are EBF, I guess that would be an additional time.

Then she also got 3 meals a day of real food.  At that point they were essentially equal to a jar of stage 3 foods (so, maybe 4.5oz?) plus usually a handful of puffs, yogurt melts, etc. and some cut up fruit.

  • Sophie started dropping nursing sessions around 9 mos.  After she really started getting into solids and finger foods like cheerios and stuff.  She just lost interest in nursing and bottles (we combo fed).  I really wanted to go until 1 year but as my pedi put it... you can't force a baby to nurse.  So I say, as long as he's willing- keep it up b/c it can literally change over night.  I went with what she wanted and she started dropping feedings slowly at 9 mos and now at almost 11 mos, she's pretty much done.  I know there is still some milk in there and I could probably trick her into nursing in the middle of the night- but that seems pointless now.  In fact, we are even struggling to get her to take enough formula.  She only wants big people food but I feel like she's so small that she really needs the nutrients of formula until at least 1- and I will probably even keep it up past then.  At this point with Gavin, I had already switched to the Toddler version of Similac and was even beginning to transition his bottles to whole milk.  I definitely won't be doing that with this skinny minnie!
