Hip dysplasia / rhino kicker

Has anyone had their child put into the 'rhino kicker(pavlik harness) for hip dysplasia? My LO was put into one three weeks ago (she was 12 wks at the time) and was just wondering if it worked and your LO didn't need it after the doctor's 8-12 wk suggested wear time. Or did your child have to go to the next brace or surgery. The doctor seems to think they caught it early enough (my LO is 3 months) that it should, just wondering if anyone else has been through this.

Re: Hip dysplasia / rhino kicker

  • My DD#2 is in a Rino brace right now. She has bilateral hip dysplasia. When she was born her left leg was completely out of the hip socket and her right hip would pop with pressure. She was put into a Pavlik harness at 1 month and was in it until she was 4 months. Her numbers improved very quickly in the Pavlik so we were able to wean her from it. Then when we went back for a follow-up x-ray to make sure everything was still looking good they found out there her left hip isn't as formed as it should be so she was put in the Rino. The ortho is still pretty confident that the Rino will correct it especially after all the improvement that we had with the Pavlik. She is going to be in the Rino for at least 3 months since we aren't going to be doing another x-ray till then because we don't want her having excessive x-rays and her hip is too formed now for ultrasounds to be accurate.

It sounds like your LO's case is pretty mild if they didn't find it until she was three months. My older daughter also had hip dysplasia and her case was much less severe compared to DD#2 but her was also still diagnosed when she was only a day old. DD#1 was put in a Pavlik for 3 months and it was completely taken care of. She is 9 yrs old now and you would never know she ever had a problem.

How many hours a day does your LO have to be in her brace? Do you get to take it off for baths? Diaper changes? That can also indicate how severe the doctor thinks it is. When DD#2 was in the Pavlik we weren't aloud to take it off at all for the first 6 weeks. We had to give her sponge baths and I learned how to change onesies with it on and that was pretty much all she wore. With DD#1 I was aloud to take it off for all diaper changes and baths and clothing changes since it wasn't as severe.

  • By the way when I say Rino I am referring to the Rino Cruiser brace not the Pavlik which she was in originally.
  • She's in the Rhino Kicker (a felt like fabric with velcro straps). She has to be in it 23 hours a day - we are allowed to take her out for one hour (we take her out each evening -around bathtime). We are allowed to take her out for 5 minutes each morning to change her too but I usually take that off the hour.

I just wanted to see if anyone else's little ones went through the same thing and how successful it was. Her right hip is fine, it's just the left hip that's 'looking immature' as the doctor said. We won't know how well it's working till December (she'll be 4.5mths old by then), so here's hoping!

Glad to hear it worked so well for DD#1 and hoping DD#2 has better success this time!

Thanks for sharing with me :)

  • The Rino kicker is the same as the Wheaten Pavlick that LO was in originally. The Rino cruiser that she is in now is a little easier in some ways because it doesn't go up over her shoulders but we have to take this one off with every diaper change there is no way around it.

If your doctor is allowing you to take it off at all then it is probably not very bad. If he said that it is just a little immature than I am sure the brace should fix it up. Good luck!

  • DD1 was diagnosed with bilateral hip dysplasia at birth.  She wore the Pavlik harness rhino kicker 24/7 for 6 weeks, 22 hours a day for 6 more weeks, and then on a weaning schedule of one less hour per day for another 6 weeks.  Her hips are perfect now, and we just have to follow up with yearly X-rays.

DD2 has no hip issues at all.
