Breastfeeding

If you are on the "mini pill" please come in!

I recently started Jolivette a form of the mini pill.  I started the pill on Oct 2nd and got a slight period per se on Oct 8th.  I started my last week of the pill tonite with no sign of a cycle in site.  I know this is different than regular BC pills, but I just don't get it.  They say that the last week in the center of the pack still contains medication it is not just sugar pills.  So when are you suppose to get your cycle on this pill?

I also wondered if you all take it at the exact same time every night ( like on the dot). I thought I just had to take it around the same time so I have always taken it within an hour or so of each other from day to day.  What are your thoughts on this?

Lastly,  have any of you noticed a lot of weight gain? Or hunger increase?  I read on a forum today about 95% of 100 people noticed a significant weight gain by more than 20lbs after being on it for a couple months.  My OB said it may make me lose weight but I haven't  as of yet.  I had been losing weight rapidly for the first 6 weeks and then it just has stayed around the same fluctuating a lb or 2 here and there.

Thanks for any information!

  • I started this pill and then quit because I just couldn't seem to take it at the same time each day.  Even if I took it in the morning, on the weekend I would sleep a little later and take it too late.  According to the package, for it to be most effective you really do have to take it "on the dot".

If you are EBF, you might not have a period even on the pill.  I've had no period for almost 20 months now due to pregnancy/breastfeeding, even when I was taking the pill.  Enjoy it!! I'm not looking forward to the return of my cycle at all. :)

  • I actually set an alarm on my phone to remind me. So far it's worked out fairly well (week 3). No weight gain or other side effects yet. And also, no AF yet (9 weeks PP).

  • You might not get a cycle because of BFing. I got what I thought was a period during my 2nd week of pills (8w pp), but haven't seen any bleeding since then.

Yes, for it to be effective you should take it at the same time on the dot (or as close as you can manage). The packaging of mine says that if you're more than 3 hours late, use a backup form of protection for some amount of time, I think it's a week. It's one of the big differences between the normal and mini pills. I also set an alarm on my phone. I take it at 6pm each night since I will never be caught in a meeting at work or asleep at that time.

I haven't noticed an increased appetite above my seemingly normal level of hunger from BFing. I lost weight rapidly in the first 6 weeks and then it slowed or stopped, but I don't think it had to do with the pill. It seemed to have more to do with normal postpartum adjustment.

  • I got some last week but haven't started it yet. When I was on OTC-Lo, I was pretty good about taking it at the same time every day. I started with an alarm on the cell phone. The best time for me was 10pm when I was getting ready to go to bed in the evening.

My doctor told me to expect some spotting,so you might have had spotting, not a period.
