Baby Names

can I use Ryan for a boy's name?

or does it now belong to the girls of the world??  Stick out tongue

DH wanted baby to be a jr if it's a boy, but i'm not feeling that idea.  so since DH's name is Robert, i thought maybe baby could just have dad's initials and possibly his same middle name since he really likes it, mn is Kelly.

wdyt of Ryan Kelly?  do you think on paper that looks like a girl?

if you don't like Kelly, what about Keith?

  • No, Ryan is all boy. I honestly don't know too many female Ryan's.

  • I like Ryan, which I think is totally a boy's name, but am not a fan of Kelly for a boy, and dislike the name Keith. What about Ryan Robert, or is that too alliterative for you?

it's not too alliterative, but it doesn't fit dh's initials, which are RKJ.  oh and also when i was working at this birth center as a mw our back up dr was robert ryan (ryan was the last name) and we all are still close, so that would be weird.

  • Ryan is defiantly a better boy name.  And my name is Ryanne!  Yes, a 33 year old Ryan(ne).  I like Ryan Keith, but Ryan Kelly is ok too.

  • I will always see Ryan as a boy's name.

What about Kellan, Keegan, Keefer, Kennedy, Kenneth, Kurt, etc?  Those are just some options.

  • Ryan will always be a boys' name in my mind. My brother's name is Ryan. I think Ryan Keith sounds nice.

  • Ryan is a boy name.  I am biased about the name Keith, since that is DH's name.  I like the name Kelly too, but I would worry about pairing it with Ryan.  Keith is not a name that I think you would have to worry about looking girly on paper or becoming a girl's name.

My vote is Ryan Keith. Yes

  • I prefer Ryan Kelly. I wouldn't think girl on paper at all, but I consider Kelly a boy name.

  • Ryan is definitely still a boy's name in my book.  I agree that Kelly would make me question if it was a boy or girl.

I'm not a huge fan of Kelly or Keith.  I like PPs suggestions of Kellan and Kurt, and would add Kirk.

  • Like pps, Ryan is a boy name to me, but I probably wouldn't pair it with Kelly.  I like Ryan Keith though.  Are there any other boy R names you like that you could pair with Kelly instead?

  • I have known a number of male Kelly's, so Ryan Kelly sounds like a great boys name (esp if you are irish/scottish/welsh)

  • Ryan is a boy name, although I do know a woman named Ryan. What about Ryan Keller, Ryan Kellen, or Ryan Kelton??
  • Ryan is still all boy to me. I only know one little girl with the name.

I like Ryan Kelly better than Ryan Keith. One of the pp's suggestions Kenneth as a mn. I like Ryan Kenneth too. I think that looks like more of a boy name than Ryan Kelly.

Have you ever considered Rylan? That's my favourite boy name. It doesn't seem like many ladies on TB like it...but I do. Yesterday I saw that someone said it was a smooshed name. Umm...no. It's a legit name.

  • I agree with PPs that it is still a boys name but the mn Kelly could make it confusing so I would pick something more masculine.

I like Ryan Keith and Ryan Kellan.

    I also suggest Ryan Kyle.

  • Ryan is a boy name.  I don't have a problem with Ryan Kelly for a boy.  Most of the time they just ask for the middle initial, on paperwork, anyway.

  • I was about to post this SAME question and thought I'd look and make sure it wasn't already posted.  Ryan is the only boys name I like and it sounds great with our chosen middle name and last name.  My concern is the same as yours though - I want people to know my boy is a boy!  I don't want to name him Ryan and have it become the new trendy girl's name.  I already know two female Ryans.  It's reassuring though to read your post and see that so many people think it's still a solid boys name.  I guess because of my concerns with it being used as a girls name, I'd avoid Kelly.  I like Ryan Robert and I know you said you know someone with that name, but they'll get over it or be flattered by it.  And I think there are lots of other K names that would sound nice.  I like the suggestion of Kyle depending on your last name.
