Potty Training Questions..

Hey ladies!

I hope someone can give me some insight about potty training.

When did you start? How did you know LO was ready? What did you do to start off? And did you read any books in order to prepare!

DD is almost 18 months and I don't know what to look for or where to start!

Thanks ladies!

Re: Potty Training Questions..

  • we started at 21 months. i knew she was ready because she loved her potty seat, got excited about picking out panties, and would tell me when she peed. i followed the 3 day pt method. she was potty trained in 2, perfected it by 1 week. she is completely trained now (over a month later)

  • We are starting now, my DD is 11 months, we are doing early potty training.  I just let her go naked any time I am home for long periods of time downstairs where it is mostly hardwood and tile, and watch her and offer her opportunities to go potty.  We haven't had any successes yet (but just started last week) but we do get close, like she will potty right next to the potty sometimes.

I am trying to observe her and when and how she usually goes potty (it helps when she is naked). When she wakes up from a  nap dry we go straight to the potty and stay around the area until she potties because I know it will happen 5-15 mins after she wakes up.

I make sure I use the words (dirty, pee, poop, potty, flush, wash, clean) any time we go to the potty, or I change her diaper. I also make sure I help her wash her hands each time as well.

I find reading books about potty training help a lot

  • Thanks so much ladies!

DD doesn't tell me yet if she has gone. If I know she has pooped I'll say, "did you poopy?" and she just looks at me so confused lol.

I heard from someone if they go long periods with dry diapers they may be ready but DD is like constantly needing her diaper changed from peeing so much! She drinks so much water!

I think we will wait a little longer. I think I will pick up a book first!

  • With my older son, I just followed his lead. He started showing interest in the toilet a little before 2, so I would let him sit on it and read him Elmo's Potty Book while he was sitting on it. If anything happened, I would get super excited. He also really wanted big kid underwear, so I let him pick out some at the store. If he went on the potty he got to wear the big kid underwear for awhile afterwards. One day right after he turned 2 he woke up and as I was getting him dressed he told me he wanted to wear big boy underwear all day. That was it. He probably had less than 5 pee accidents ever after that and no poop accidents. I totally lucked out! I think it helped that he was super verbal and we started putting him on the big toilet as soon as he showed interest. No little potty chair, etc. I am sure with my 1 year old now, potty training will be awful. I can't get that lucky twice!

Man, that is lucky! Especially with a boy - I have heard they are harder to potty train! DD shows interest in the toilet and the toilet paper lol. As weird as it is, she is ALWAYS watching us go potty.  I try shutting her out of the room but we have a pocket door into our masterbath and she just comes right in and just stares at us! I did the whole naked thing one time and tried putting her on the potty but then she just peed on the floor. I need to start verbalizing more to her!
