when to offer peanut butter

eli is a bread fanatic and sometimes i have to offer some toast to get him going on his meal ...then he kinda realizes that oh yeah i do want food and will then start to eat other things...but i'd rather get him some protein etc while he's eating bread and not just butter...when did you first offer a little taste of peanut butter?

Re: when to offer peanut butter

  • Around a year, we introduced it to Harry.  He didn't seem to be allergic to anything and we got him tested (because we had to bring Alex so we just did a 2fer) and the only thing that came back was dust mites.

Alexander is a different story.  He had a few violent reactions to eggs.  So we had him tested and it turns out he's allergic to eggs, beef (!) and lentiles (wtf!),  So he doesn't get peanut butter or shellfish because I'm still shell shocked.

I would say if he seems to be doing well with other foods and doesn't have a family history, go for it.  Just make sure you do it in the morning on a weekday (just in case you have to bring him in) that you are free.

  • My peds are pretty laid back, but, specifically said no nuts until 2.  I've pretty much done what I want, but have chosen to listen to this, so, we haven't introduced nuts at all yet.  But, I can't wait to give her peanut butter in a couple of months!!

  • We just did it in the last few weeks. I gave it to him Straight not on bread first and let him see if he liked the texture ad then did bread a few days ago. He liked it! I had benadryl in hand both times in case there was an emergency. He also has had plenty of products w peanuts/oil in them so I wasn't overly concerned.
  • Around 12.5 months I gave her a little, and then just kept giving it to her once in awhile.  Now she eats PB&J about once a week or so.  I made sure to test it out when I was home and watching her.

  • We are waiting until 2 y/o based on our pedi's recommendation.  However, most people I know only wait until their LOs are 1.   I give them sunbutter (made with sunflower seeds) and almond butter.

  • All my kids had right after they turned one. One of kids sees allergist for other food allergies and said that they are now changing their thinking of not offering things (peanut butter) before two. He did say if there is a family history of it you should wait or do it under a close eye!

  • She had it by 8 months, no issues. My pedi is of the thought that sooner is better than later.

If you want, you can also try cream cheese on toast, or any kind of spreadable cheese too.

  • try hummus too - for spreadable protein.

My pedi is completely laid back and she's asked us to wait for 1yr. Anna is going to have a heck of a week when she turns 12 months - because I can't wait to give her eggs either!

  • Our pedi is laid back. He told us delaying foods does not prevent allergies,j ust delays them. We gave him PB just before a year. We have no family history. He loved it and still does. He would eat PB&J every day if i let him.
