Soy and Dairy Free Butter/Shortening

One of the moms in my playgroup is soy and dairy free for her nursing daughter. I am wanting to make cookies for playgroup this week which call for butter. I'm wondering if there are soy/dairy free "butters" that work pretty well for baking? I know Crisco is usually a fine substitute, but it has soybean oil. TIA!

Re: Soy and Dairy Free Butter/Shortening

  • Spectrum Organic Shortening is made with 100% palm oil. Canola oil is also soy and dairy free, in case you find a recipe that calls for oil rather than butter.

  • Earth Balance makes a dairy free, soy free "butter" that you could use.

  • Can you find a recipe with oil instead of butter? I always had such poor success baking with the synthetic tub butters, but it does seem like most of the allergy-friendly recipes want you to use something hard.

  • You can get the Earth's best in stick "butter" form.  Make sure you get the soy free version (the red box I think).

  • We've used the Spectrum Organic Shortening and I really loved it.  My cookies were so fluffy!  We found it at Whole Foods.

I used this to make frosting for allergy free chocolate cake. It was fantastic!
