when we're considering buying a minivan. We were in the mall yesterday and they had some parked in the middle to look at, and DH lit up like a Christmas tree. I've never seen a man more excited to look at minivans, let alone own/drive one. Anyways, for those of you that have "family cars", what do you have and do you like it? I currently have a CR-V, but between pets, luggage, and baby stuff we aren't able to fit it all for family trips. We will also most likely have another child in 3 years.
Recommend your mommy ride!
Re: Oh lord, the day has come...
When I found out I was pregnant one of the 1ST things DH said was please tell me we never have to get a minivan. LOL. He has a Tahoe and I have a Kia Sorento and we have taken 2 road trips and loading up baby stuff in even my SUV (which is smaller) has been easy. The new Kia Sorento's have 3rd row seating so its perfect if you have 2 or 3 LO's. It has 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. If you are on a budget and need a good reliable, afforable and spacious SUV then a Sorento is the way to go.
This is my 2nd Kia and I have had great luck with them.
We just got a Toyota Sienna in August, and oh my...I didn't think it was possible to love a vehicle this much!
It's amazing. With 2 kids, the auto sliding doors are invaluable. We didn't get the auto lift gate (just too pricey), but that would've been really nice. Love the backup cam, DVD player, and overall comfort & ease of use -- the seats move around so easily, and the back end is huge with the 3rd row folded down.
We really didn't look at anything else, though, so I really can't compare it. We're a Toyota family, so it was an easy sell for us. But I'd recommend the Sienna to absolutely anyone .
We have a Ford Expedition that I ADORE. It has plenty of room for two car seats (3 car seats with my niece), a 90lb dog, and luggage for an 8 hour road trip My loyalty to Expeditions is sealed because when I was 6 months pregnant with DS I was hit by a delivery truck..... the delivery truck ended up with more damage than our Expedition.
The gas mileage could be better but we are a one care family. Additionally after that accident I don't know if I could get in a smaller car. DH mentioned getting a smaller SUV or a minivan but I can not part with my Expedition.
Happy Shopping.
THANK YOU to those who choose to buy American made! Stimulate OUR economy, not other contries!
I drive a Ford Edge. It doesn't have the third row seats, but fits us well. I also have a vista roof- opens alllll the way! No very baby friendly, but quite awesome!
Many foreign cars (Honda, Toyota) actually produce cars in the U.S. AND obviously Americans work at the dealerships. So even those who bought foreign have helped stimulate OUR economy.
Don't be ashamed..OP....DH and I both want a minivan SO BAD! We really like the Honda Odyssey, but will probably go with a Dodge Grand Caravan because of the "stow and go" seats (we like to buy lots of BIG stuff...need to cart it around...lol).
I totally couldn't care less about the stigma of being a "minivan mom". Every time DH's mom comes into town and we ride around in her Grand Caravan...we think "we NEED one of these!!!" We've looked at the SUVs but they just aren't as convenient as those sliding side doors to get kids in and out of! I am the only mom on my block that doesn't have one...and I desperately want to "keep up" with the other hot mommas on my block!
GL car shopping! We have plans to get our mommobile in two years...(hopefully when I'm pg with our second!)
We'll most likely have one more child within the next 2 years or so and will need a different vehicle at that point since 3 carseats won't fit. We'd like to get a Toyota Sienna at that time.
Go Phils!!
My Honda was built in Ohio or Georgia (I forget which) and the Ford my FIL almost bought was made in Mexico. He wanted to buy American made only and we told him to look into where his "American" car was actually made and it was Mexico. Shock to him!
Go Phils!!
Hyundai Santa fe, similar to the CR-V, but it does the job for my family of four.
ETA: we dont have pets, so my mom-mobile prob wouldnt work for you

Exactly! There are even BMW's made in the states now. And many "american" cars are produced outside our borders and therefore stimulating others economies. Check out where Fords Factories are... Shocker... many are NOT in the US
My Kia was made in Georgia. Where was your Ford made?
I have a Chevy Traverse. Love it! It has a third row that is roomy enough for adults and when the third row is down the trunk area is huge. We can fit our double stroller plus groceries or shopping bags. It has lots of cool features, remote start, navigation, remote opening for the trunk, big but not too big, easy to drive, etc.
The only thing I wish I would have done differently is get captains chairs instead of a bench seat in the middle. I thought I wanted the extra seating, but I didn't really think through the whole two carseats making it hard to get into the back situation. Otherwise I love it!
