Any DIY hair dyers?

I would like to cover my greys, but I am too cheap to pay my stylist to do it.  What do you use at home?  Any tips or tricks?

Thanks!

Re: Any DIY hair dyers?

  • I have used Natural Instincts and left it on for almost double the recommended time, but my grey's still don't take the colour too well.  Stubborn, wiry things that they are!  I haven't tried anything else yet.  I just get highlights at the salon a couple of times a year to disguise them a bit.

  • I use Clairol Hydrience about every five weeks.  I do the roots only and leave it in for 45 minutes.
  • I am rocking my gray hair.  I earned every one of them.

  • I have some John Frieda mousse stuff that came highly recommended by a friend that I've been holding onto.
  • I have been dyeing my own hair for close to 15 years. I use either L'Oreal Preference (the color stays better) or some of the new John Frieda mousse. Both work pretty well. Since I color mine red, I have found these two don't turn blonde as the color fades. I color my hair every five weeks. You can often get a good deal at Target or Ulta (with a coupon) if you sign up as a member.

I usually keep mine on about 4 minutes longer than recommended and the grey is completely covered.

  • I have used Clairol semi-permanent hair dye for year.  I have always been too afraid to try the permanent.  I really like it.  It last around 5 weeks for me, but I don't shampoo my hair everyday.  I have moved over to getting my hair colored professionally because I wear it long now and it ended up being 3 different colors when I was doing it myself.  I guess I wasn't very good at it.
  • I use Garnier Fructis but have also used Clairol.  I find that I have to do it about every 3 weeks (not that I do, but that would be ideal for constant coverage).  I also leave it on for longer than the box says.  I really hate coloring my hair and wish I could get it done professionally, but I can't even imagine the cost involved for such constant upkeep.

  • I won't use boxed color (don't throw things at me - I don't care if you use it!) - so I mix my own if I can't afford to go to my stylist. Boxed stuff leaves a permanent build up on your hair so if you ever go in to have it done prof then it will more than likely be a corrective color and that's CHA-CHING!!! Instead I buy developer and a bottle of color, mix it, apply. Really easy. All the stuff is at Sally's or Amazon!
  • OMG! Urbanflowerpot your LO is SO cute!!!  Hope he's well.

I pay for a professional since I'm like 75% gray and don't have the time or inclination to color it myself. It's my sole treat to myself. To save money, I only get my hair cut every 12 weeks and color every 6 (pay $40 for single process and to trim my bangs).  When I do full cut/color it's $100. Pricey but my self-esteem is worth it.
