School-Aged Children

When do your school-aged children do homework?

We are currently doing homework as soon as the kiddos get home from school and off of the bus, but am wondering if this is the "norm" and when everybody's kids are doing homework after school.

Re: When do your school-aged children do homework?

  • My husband goes and picks up DD and when they get home, she eats a snack and starts on her homework. She's in first grade. We think it helps to keep her focus. She's still in work mode so she gets it done quicker than if she was to play for a little while.

  • I give my kids about 30 minutes to unwind and snack, then they have to start HW.  DD goes to a very tough magnet middle school, and can have as much as 2 or 3 hours of work in a night.  Usually it's more like an hour or 90 minutes, but she cannot wait until evening to start, or she's too tired to do well.

DS has 20 minutes of reading + whatever other small assignment he has to tackle each day.  So for him it's more a matter of establishing good study habits and getting into the routine of "homework first; fun second" at this point.

  • I let the kids play at the school playground for at least 1/2 hour before coming home and then they do homework when we get home.  I feel they need to run around a bit after being in school from 8:30 - 3:30.
  • DD1 likes to get her work done right away.  She usually eats her after school snack while doing the work.

DD2 likes to do her work in the morning.  She gets up so early, it hasn't been a problem.

DD3's does her work while I make dinner.

    .
  • My 3 come home and have a snack while I go through book bags/ folders. They then start on hw. It has worked out well because they get to play the rest of the evening. I tried allowing them to have play time first and they wore themselves out or got too wound up they couldn't focus. So first thing for us.

  • She does it right after school. Our normal routine when she gets home: go the bathroom, wash hands, get juice/milk/snack, get started on homework. Monday-Thursday, she consistently has math, spelling, and reading. Some days, they have extra materials to read in a particular area (social studies or science). This year, her teacher said he prefers not to give homework over the weekend.

There are a few times that we don't do it immediately after school. For instance, if she has a cross country meet. It is much harder for her to concentrate if we do it later. She tends to get more upset if something is difficult.

  • DS (2nd grade) gets off the school bus at 3:35. He plays for a little and then eats dinner at 5pm since he's starving (eats lunch at 12). At 5:30 he starts his HW and does it in the kitchen so I can start making dinner for me & DH. It usually takes him 30  minutes. He also reads for 20 minutes each night, and starts at 7/7:15. We had the same routine last year.
  • Ours varies since iam usually the only parent in the house. If it is a Soccer night, we do it right after soccer practice. If it is a regular night we do it as soon as we get home from work, or right after dinner.

  • First grader - usually he gets about 1/2 an hour to unwind - a snack, a tv show. Then the TV goes off - at 4, usually - and he does his homework.  I try to sit with him, so when it's done, it gives me time to start dinner.  His activities also tend to be a little later, so it's good we get homework out of the way.

Daddy picks him up a couple of days a week and he prefers to wait for me for most of it (he might do his math, but will definitely wait for me for reading and spelling).  In that case, I get home around 5 and we do an earlier dinner and do homework right after -even before I clean up the kitchen.

On Thursdays, DD has ballet at 4:30, so he's been bringing his homework with him and doing it in the hallway with a friend who has a little sister in DD's class.  That's not the most efficient homework period - and he has spelling tests on Fridays - but he's knows the material.  If I were worried, we'd change things up.

  • DH is who helps with the homework here - I don't NEARLY have the patience for it!  Typically when DD gets off the bus I check her folder to find out how her day went...  Then when DH has time to work with her is when she does her homework...
