Will return to work fulltime @ 6-8 wks, when to start pumping?

I had a little longer w/ #1, and she was also formula supplemented for various reasons.

Plan on EBF/EP for this LO.  I will hvae to go back @ 6-8 weks, no choice financially or work deadline related if I have any hope of having my annual contract renewed...

What would yu ladies suggest as to when and how often to start pumping so that LO ill have a supply for G-ma's during the day (7a-5p) M-F?

Re: Will return to work fulltime @ 6-8 wks, when to start pumping?

  • I started pumping when my DD was 2 weeks old to build up a supply and get myself in a routine of having to pump. I went back to work last week and had about 70oz of supply in the freezer and now with all the practice I got beforehand I am a pro at this!! I pump 3x at work during an 8hr shift and bring home about 24oz a day so it has been working out great and it only takes me about 10-15mins to pump so it really isn't as bad as I though it would be. Hope this helps!

  • Honestly? I started pumping as soon as my milk came in. I didn't go super crazy and create a major oversupply, but I did get a pretty good supply going. I didn't do that with my son and I wish I would have. It's all worked out about 100 times better this time because I learned from my mistakes.

  • I started pumping once a day after the first morning feeding to build up my stash at about a week.  It also happened to coincide with the first time I would be able to pump at work.  I introduced the bottle at two weeks and he's done great with it.

  • I started pumping as soon as my milk came in on the side that he didn't nurse on... so about a week.

  • Thanks!  Last time I did this was 8 yrs ago, and though LO nursed for 11 months (even with my return to work) she had some formula during the day, so I couldn't really remember how well the whole thing went..It's been so long!
